Several heatwave indices failed to capture severity of extreme weather: Study
heatwaves have become more frequent and intense, emerging as a significant contributor to heat-related deaths. Researchers said that this underscores the urgency of recognising their impact and severity. In the study, published in the journal Nexus, the researchers from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University analysed six available heat wave indices, including the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index and Canada's humidex. WBGT index was first developed in the 1950s by the US military to prevent heat-related illnesses in training camps.

They (Opposition) want to only create an atmosphere. Our minister will explain in detail when he introduces the bill. They want to misguide some people in the community. Why 'Stupid Radishes' are causing panic in China
ride-hailing drivers are facing the threat of job loss from artificial intelligence as robotaxis begin to proliferate. Self-driving technology, still experimental, is being aggressively greenlit in China compared to the US, where approvals are often suspended after accidents. At least 19 Chinese cities are testing robotaxis and robobuses, with seven cities approving tests without human-driver monitors from at least five industry leaders: Apollo Go, Pony.ai, WeRide, AutoX, and SAIC Motor. Apollo Go, a subsidiary of technology giant Baidu, plans to deploy 1,000 robotaxis in Wuhan by year-end and operate in 100 cities by 2030. Pony.ai, backed by Japan's Toyota Motor, operates 300 robotaxis with plans to increase to 1,000 by 2026. WeRide is known for autonomous taxis, vans, buses, and street sweepers, while AutoX, backed by Alibaba Group, operates in cities including Beijing and Shanghai. SAIC Motor has been operating robotaxis since 2021. In the US, Alphabet's Waymo operates uncrewed robotaxis that collect fares, with over 1,000 cars in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. Cruise, backed by General Motors, resumed testing in April after an accident last year.

ICICI Prudential cuts fund’s equity allocation to 20-month low
Balanced Advantage fund, the second-largest dynamic asset allocation scheme with assets under management of ₹60,000 crore, reduced its equity allocation to 31.2% in July, the lowest in the past 20 months, amid increasing equity valuation. «The fund is run in a countercyclical manner, paring down equity when markets rise and increasing it when markets fall. In line with the model and the prevailing high equity market valuations, the net equity levels of the fund have been reduced,» said Sankaran Naren, CEO, ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund. Balanced advantage funds invest in a mix of debt and equity, based on market valuations. Such schemes lower allocation to equities when market valuations appear expensive and vice versa. The net equity component in the scheme can vary between 30% and 80%, with the balance being invested in a mix of arbitrage and debt, with total equity allocation above 65%, thereby giving it equity taxation. Fund managers decide equity valuations based on the trailing price-to-earnings (PE) ratio of Nifty 50 or S&P BSE 100 and use other ratios like price-to-book and dividend yield to decide equity allocation.
