Tech giant Google Inc has picked up office space spread over an entire floor in Blackstone Group-owned Nucleus Office Parks' commercial tower Fintech One at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) in Gandhinagar to set up its global fintech centre. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, apprised Modi of Google's plans to work on strengthening financial inclusion in India by leveraging UPI. India is expected to restrict exports of organic sugar for the 2023-24 season, in addition to raw, white and refined versions, as the outward shipment of the organic form of the sweetener has touched record high, said an official. Currently, raw, white and refined sugar — consumed as an everyday item — are on the restricted list till October 31. The government is expected to extend this timeline due to concerns about productivity.

Gaza Strip was worsening, with only four or five days of stocks left in the shops. WFP said stocks were getting low in warehouses inside the Palestinian enclave, but at the shop level, the situation was even more acute. «The situation in Gaza is getting worse by the minute: the humanitarian situation but also of course the food security situation,» WFP's Middle East spokeswoman Abeer Etefa, told reporters at the UN in Geneva via video-link from Cairo. «The current stocks of essential food commodities are sufficient for only two weeks — and that's at the wholesalers' level,» she said, with the warehouses located in Gaza City in the north of the territory and shops having difficulties replenishing supplies. «Inside the shops, the stocks are getting close to less than a few days, maybe four or five days of food stocks left.» Gaza-based Hamas fighters broke through Israel's heavily fortified border on October 7, killing more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians. Israel has responded with withering air strikes on Hamas-controlled Gaza and by deploying tens of thousands of troops to the border in preparation for a full-scale ground offensive. Israel has demanded that residents of north Gaza leave for the south, hoping to clear the area of civilians in preparation for a perilous urban ground assault. Etefa said that out of five flour mills in the Gaza Strip, only one was operating due to security concerns and the unavailability of fuel. «So the bread supply is running low and people are lining up for hours to get bread,» she said. Only five bakeries out of 23 in Gaza contracted by WFP were still in operation, she added.

savings scheme for senior citizens have surged after the government doubled the limit in the budget, crossing Rs 1 lakh crore in the first half of the fiscal year. The Senior Citizen Savings Scheme mopup until September 23 this fiscal was two-and-a-half times higher than the Rs 40,000 crore collection during the same period in FY23, a senior finance ministry official said. A new small savings scheme for women introduced in the budget is also off to a good start, having garnered Rs 13,500 crore until September 23, the official told ET. The deposits are expected to keep rising in the coming months. The Centre has budgeted Rs 4.71 lakh crore from the National Small Savings Fund (NSSF) in FY24, against FY23 revised estimate of Rs 4.39 lakh crore, to finance its fiscal deficit, which is pegged at Rs 17.87 lakh crore. The FY24 budget raised the deposit limit under the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme to Rs 30 lakh from Rs 15 lakh. The scheme has been fetching an attractive interest of 8.2 per cent since the June quarter, against 8% in the March quarter of FY23. The interests are payable every quarter. The scheme has a tenure of five years, with a facility for a three-year extension upon maturity. Premature closure is allowed, subject to a penalty. The Mahila Samman Savings Certificate, however, is a one-time small savings scheme that will be made available up to March 2025. The scheme has a maximum deposit limit of Rs 2 lakh at a fixed interest rate of 7.5 per cent, with a partial withdrawal option.
