Bilkis Bano case: Supreme Court questions convict for depositing fine when matter is under consideration
Supreme Court on Thursday questioned one of the convicts in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case and the murder of seven of her family members during the 2002 Gujarat riots for depositing the fine imposed on him when the hearing on the pleas challenging his remission was underway before it. Senior advocate Sidharth Luthra, appearing for convict Ramesh Rupabhai Chandana, told a bench of justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan that convicts have approached the trial court in Mumbai and have deposited the fine imposed upon them. «Does non deposit of fine has a bearing on the remission? Did you apprehend that non deposit of fine would have a impact on the merits of the case. First you ask for permission and now without permission you have deposited,» the bench said. Responding to the court's query, Luthra said non-deposition of fine does not affect the decision on remission but he had advised his clients to deposit the fine to «reduce the controversy». «According to me, this has no legal consequence. But since the argument was raised...To reduce the controversy, we have deposited now,» he said. The submission assumes significance as one of the PIL petitioners, challenging the remission granted to convicts, has argued that their premature release is illegal as they have not served their sentence in entirety.

Core sector growth eases marginally to 8% in July
core sector registered an 8% growth in July, compared with 8.3% in the previous month, as all eight sectors recorded a positive growth for the first time in 14 months, according to data released Friday. While the continuation of government capex (both centre and states) in July led to a strong performance in steel and cement sectors, economists noted that the growth in cement and electricity sector, despite seasonal rains, indicated a progression of economic activity. “Overall, the recovery in the infrastructure industries appears to be ticking off on a pervasive note which bodes well for the private sector capex cycle which Ind-Ra believes is at the cusp of a pickup,” said Paras Jasrai and Sunil K Sinha, economists at Ind-Ra. On Friday, another data released by the government showed GDP growth rising to a four-quarter high of 7.8% on the back of rising consumption and sustained capex. Economists pointed out that a private capex revival was necessary for India to sustain growth momentum.

Study finds adding zinc to farmland soil can prove helpful in preventing childhood stunting in India
zinc to farmland soil can help prevent childhood stunting — a condition due to chronic undernutrition — in India, according to a study. Chronic undernutrition is associated with poor brain development and long-lasting harmful consequences, such as reduced school performance and increased disease risks, the researchers said. The study, published recently in the journal Scientific Reports, is the first large-scale research to examine the association between children's nutritional status or health outcomes and soil mineral availability in India, where more than a third of children under five suffer from stunting. «Our results add to a growing body of literature suggesting that interventions like micronutrient-enriched fertilisers may have a positive effect on health,» said study lead author Claire Morton, an undergraduate student in mathematics and computational science at Stanford University, US. «This doesn't prove that those interventions would be cost-effective for India, but it's an exciting indication that they are worth testing,» Morton said. The researchers analysed health data from nearly 300,000 (3 lakh) children and one million women across India with over 27 million soil tests drawn from a nationwide soil health programme.

Violence ravaged Manipur joins “Meri Maati Mera Desh” campaign
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 9th August, the nationwide campaign is conceived as a culminating event of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ to pay tribute to those great leaders who have made the supreme sacrifice for the motherland. The State government successfully collected Maati or soils from all its 16 districts, including the hotbed of the recent violence — Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Kangpokpi and Pherzawl- and symbolically displayed the territorial integrity of Manipur, represented by the soils and each district adorning the tricolor flag to depict the core concept of One Nation. The focus of the programme, held on Thursday at the Manipur State Film Development Society in Imphal was the display of the 388 different batches of soils collected from the 16 districts and homage offering to the soils by the dignitaries attending the national wide campaign, comprising cabinet ministers, MLAs and top bureaucrats of the State. As part of the campaign, soils from the State would be taken to Kartavya Path in New Delhi where a unique Amrit Vatika would be developed by planting different indigenous trees in the mixture of the different soils brought of every part of the country. Addressing the gathering, chief minister N Biren Singh emphasized the importance of collective efforts towards the nation building and development.

Nifty settled lower on the last day of August on Thursday, tracking weak global cues, while investors awaited India's gross domestic product (GDP) data for the April-June quarter of current fiscal (2023-2024) which is expected later today. India's GDP likely moved up to 7.7 per cent in the first quarter, recording the fastest annual pace in a year, supported by robust government capital expenditure and a strong services sector. However, some economists and rating agencies expect India's Q1 GDP print to beat the 8 per cent forecast of the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).
