Canada extends streamlined medical exam exemption for low-risk immigrants until 2029
Canada (IRCC) has extended a temporary public policy that exempts certain low-risk foreign nationals within Canada from needing an additional immigration medical examination (IME). The policy, which has been in place for two years, will now continue until October 5, 2029. This extension is designed to speed up application processing and enhance services for eligible applicants. The exemption applies to foreign nationals who have either a new or pending application for permanent or temporary residence or a permanent resident visa made from within Canada. To qualify, applicants must have completed an IME within the past five years, even if it has expired. They should have posed no public health or safety risk or have reported to public health authorities as required for monitoring. This policy has already benefited more than 286,000 individuals, enabling faster processing and reducing bureaucratic delays. By extending it, IRCC aims to continue improving operational efficiency while monitoring public health outcomes in partnership with the Public Health Agency of Canada. This also allows more time to assess the long-term effectiveness of the streamlined process.

L&T eyes role in NASA's successor to the International Space Station
ISRO's space missions for more than five decades, India's largest engineering firm Larsen and Toubro has now set its eyes on the international market, particularly the next International Space Station. L&T was earlier in talks with Jeff Bezo's Blue Origin for supplying orbital launch capabilities and space habitat solutions but the negotiations ran into some difficulties. «Some remnants of that discussion continue till today but now with NASA. So, we are also hopeful that when the US requires its next space station, Indian firms will have a role to play in the supply chain,» Vikas Khita, Vice President, L&T Precision Engineering and Systems, told PTI.

Bodies of three more Naxalites found after encounter in Chhattisgarh; toll rises to 31
Dantewada: The bodies of three more Naxalites were recovered on Saturday morning in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region, where a fierce encounter with security personnel took place a day ago, police said. With this, the number of Naxalites killed in the gun battle with the security personnel on Friday has risen to 31, they said, adding that a search operation is still underway in the area. «Bodies of three more Naxalites were recovered this morning from the dense forest where the encounter took place on Friday,» Inspector General of Police (Bastar range) Sundarraj P told PTI. «With this, the toll of Naxalites in the encounter rose to 31. The identity of the Naxalites is yet to be ascertained, but prima facie it appears that they belonged to PLGA (People's Liberation Guerilla Army) company No. 6, Platoon 16 of Maoists and east Bastar division of Maoists,» he said. On Friday, the gunfight broke out between security forces and Naxalites around 1 am in a forest between Nendur and Thulthuli villages on Dantewada and Narayanpur inter-district border, where a joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Special Task Force (STF) was out on an anti-Naxal operation. The intermittent firing lasted for a long time and the security forces continued search operations in the area.

AI opportunity: Hope to see an emerging Indian company among top ten global firms in next 10 years, says Aswath Damodaran
Aswath Damodaran, Professor, Stern School of Business, NYU, says AI is set to be a key frontier for emerging companies. If this sector grows significantly, it raises the question of whether the top five companies will remain US-based. It would be encouraging to see at least one Indian company among these leaders. Damodaran thinks Europe may struggle to produce a major player. Indian firms have a unique opportunity now, especially since China has restricted its major tech players like Tencent, JD, and Alibaba, limiting their potential to invest in AI. This creates a chance for India to capitalize on the situation, but it will require significant effort. If a prominent Indian tech company appears among the top ten global firms by market capitalization in the next decade, it would be an exciting development.

Haryana Assembly Election 2024: When, where and how to watch the exit poll results LIVE
October 5. In this single-phase election, the state’s 90 legislative assembly seats will be contested by 1,031 candidates. These elections follow the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, where the BJP retained five of the ten seats, while Congress secured the other five. The political landscape in Haryana is heated, with a fierce competition between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress. The BJP, currently facing significant anti-incumbency sentiment, is working to hold onto power, while Congress aims to reclaim control of the state after years of being in the opposition. The elections come at a crucial time, months after the collapse of the BJP-Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) coalition government, which had been formed after the 2019 Assembly elections. With political tensions high, Haryana’s voters are expected to play a key role in determining the state’s future.

EU presses ahead with Chinese EV tariffs after divided vote
electric vehicles, the EU executive said on Friday, even after the bloc's largest economy Germany rejected them, exposing a rift over its biggest trade row with Beijing in a decade. The proposed duties on Chinese-built EVs of up to 45% would cost carmakers billions of extra dollars to bring cars into the bloc and are set to be imposed from next month for five years. The Commission, which oversees the bloc's trade policy, has said they would counter what it sees as unfair Chinese subsidies after a year-long anti-subsidy investigation, but it also said on Friday it would continue talks with Beijing.

Laddu adulteration just tip of iceberg, much more to be probed, says Andhra Dy CM Pawan Kalyan
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has said that the laddu adulteration issue is just a tip of the iceberg and there are many more decisions taken during the previous regime that have to be investigated. Addressing a rally here on Thursday, he said he was not blaming the YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy personally for the laddu adulteration, but the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) board, which was constituted during the previous regime. A day before the Supreme Court is expected to hear the case on the allegation of using animal fat in making Tirupati laddu, Kalyan said he wanted to communicate to the judiciary that Jagan was facing several charges including corruption allegations and it has to consider before giving a decision (in laddu adulteration case). «Laddu prasadam adulteration is a tip of the iceberg. We don't know how many crores of rupees they collected during the tenure of (the last) five years. That has to be investigated,» the Deputy CM said.
