Is India’s food inflation being measured correctly? EAC-PM member Nilesh Shah weighs in
Nilesh Shah, managing director and CEO of Kotak Mutual Fund, shared his views on the complexities surrounding food inflation and its role in economic policy during a recent event. Shah, also a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, questioned the way food inflation is being calculated and included in policymaking. Shah raised concerns about whether the free food distributed to over 80 crore Indians under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) is accounted for when measuring food inflation. The program, which provides free or subsidised food grains to a vast segment of the population, could impact the headline food inflation number, Shah suggested. «My only submission will be are we measuring food inflation correctly? For example, 80 crore Indians are provided free food. That cost is more than our fiscal deficit. Is the credit taken in food inflation?» said Shah while speaking at a Kotak MF event.

Average Swiggy order value can show double-digit growth every year for foreseeable future; no plan to raise funds now: Rahul Bothra
Rahul Bothra, CFO, and Sriharsha Majety, MD & Group CEO, Swiggy, in conversation with ET Now post announcement of Q2 results. Bothra says while some of Swiggy competitors have been raising funds, that is mostly defensive capital. Swiggy has a very strong balance sheet with Rs 8,000 crore plus cash balance existing with us. They have a profitable food delivery business that continues to accrue cash into the treasury and the quick commerce business, which is expected to turn profitable in six to seven quarters and for which they have a substantial cash balance. So, there are no near-term fundraising plans. On the overall consolidated EBITDA loss and the net loss, which has widened on a sequential basis, what is adding to the pressure on the bottom line and when can we expect the loss to start narrowing? Rahul Bothra: If you look at our overall numbers, we have improved our adjusted EBITDA by 30% in our B2C GOV businesses over the last year with an improvement of Rs 147 crore.

Auto sector faces short-term challenges, recovery likely by March: Sunil Subramaniam
«I think that overall conditions should favour this and then March is usually a season when auto sales pick up because it is the year end clearance and all that. So, all of this excess backlog will probably get cleared at that time. So, I expect this weakness to be there for the next month or so,» says Sunil Subramaniam, Market Expert. So, firstly to start off with the auto sector. Now, we all knew that December is the month when discounts will come in from auto companies to boost their sales, but how long do you see the weakness that we are seeing in the auto space right now also because of a high base will continue going forward. For how long do you expect that to happen? Sunil Subramaniam: I think it will last till the middle of February, I do not see a quick turn on that because one of the things which is hurting and these are the bottom of the pyramid in the auto segment, two wheelers are the lowest priced vehicles and that is where the inflation has been hurting the consumer and hence demand at the bottom of the pyramid has been weak and I think until the monsoon forecast actually translates into lower vegetable and food prices and inflation eases.

RBI’s December policy preview: On the horns of a dilemma
RBI has largely been following a data-driven and evidence-based approach in its pursuit of a contextually relevant Policy, a Policy stemming from the concerns at the time of formulation and an attempt to arrive at judicious Policy prescriptions. With an uncanny ability to connect the dots and draw meaningful inferences, it is not difficult to predict the shape of things likely to come as I have done repeatedly for the last several years. But this time is different, the choices are not so stark and we are confronted with the cognizable Shakespearean dilemma of “to be or not to be”. No wonder, then, opinion about the Policy move is divided: some believe that a rate cut is necessary to shore up a flagging economy; others maintain that given the ravages of the inflationary spiral, an unchanged rate would best serve the objectives of the central bank.

FSSAI reclassifies packaged drinking water as high-risk, mandates stricter checks
FSSAI has reclassified packaged drinking water and mineral water as a high-risk food category, mandating stricter regulatory controls and annual facility inspections. The move, effective immediately following an order dated November 29, requires manufacturers to undergo mandatory third-party food safety audits and comply with enhanced quality standards. Central licence holders in this category must now submit to annual inspections aimed at mitigating potential health risks associated with packaged water production. The reclassification by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) follows recent amendments to the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011, which previously removed mandatory BIS certification requirements for certain food products.
