The ghost of inflation may not leave the Indian economy anytime soon
Axis Bank's latest report warns that inflation in India is unlikely to ease quickly, as both core and food price indices are expected to remain closely linked. Despite food prices and vegetable costs being at cyclical highs, the report highlights that supply responses may lag the demand boost driven by income-transfer schemes. «In India, we do not see inflation easing quickly: over the long term, core and food price indices move together. Though food relative to core, and vegetables relative to food, are both at cyclical highs, the supply response may lag the demand boost from income-transfer schemes,» said the report titled " India Economic and Market Outlook 2025 ". ADB lowers India's GDP growth forecast to 6.5 pc for FY25
Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Wednesday lowered India's economic growth forecast to 6.5 per cent for the current financial year from its earlier estimate of 7 per cent due to lower-than-expected growth in private investment and housing demand. The multilateral development bank has also lowered India's growth forecast for 2025-26 financial year. Changes in US trade, fiscal, and immigration policies could dent growth and add to inflation in developing Asia and the Pacific, according to the latest edition of Asian Development Outlook (ADO). The report also said Asia and the Pacific's economies are projected to grow 4.9 per cent in 2024, slightly below ADB's September forecast of 5 per cent.

Trudeau’s Liberals set to face 3rd Conservative non-confidence vote
third Conservative non-confidence vote on Monday, but the government is likely to survive with the support of the NDP.Members of Parliament are supposed to vote on a motion that quotes NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s criticism of the Liberals and asks the House to agree with Singh and vote to bring down the government.Singh said last week he is not going to support the Conservatives, so the motion will likely fail. The House is also supposed to vote on an NDP motion calling on the government to expand the GST break and the $250 “working Canadians rebate” to fully retired seniors and people who rely on disability benefits. Those votes will come after MPs deal with a debate on a point of privilege raised by Conservative deputy leader Melissa Lantsman on Friday. As opposition parties continue to use procedural tactics to stall one another’s motions, the House is facing a deadline on Tuesday to vote to approve billions of dollars in government spending.Treasury Board President Anita Anand has asked Parliament for approval of $21.6 billion to fund programs including housing, dental care and the national school food program. If that doesn’t pass, some programs could face a cash shortfall, including veteran benefits and natural disaster assistance. The spending request is set to go to a debate and vote late Tuesday. The final two opposition motions of the year also need to be introduced before Tuesday.

Mass Hindu migration from B'desh unlikely in face of current crisis: Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee
Speaking exclusively to PTI during his recent visit to the city to participate in a curtain-raiser event of the 16th edition of the Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival, where his latest title 'Chhaunk: On Food, Economics and Society' was launched, Banerjee said he felt India's «explicit political preference for Hindu migrants from Bangladesh» is what prompted the population to leave their homeland in the past, rather than the attacks on the community. «People always leave for another country where they have their families or to a richer nation where the economic opportunities are higher,» the Nobel laureate said, «I am not surprised that Hindu Bengalis have left Bangladesh and settled in, say, large pockets of Assam because of India's overt preference for Hindus instead of Muslims.»

Repeatedly refusing meals, water on a flight could make flight attendants suspicious about you
gold smuggling attempt involving three passengers on a flight from Almaty, Uzbekistan to Delhi after their suspicious behaviour during the journey raised alarms. The eagle-eyed staff onboard the flight alerted the captain who contacted customs officers at Delhi's IGI airport to intercept the passengers. The incident occurred aboard a flight en route to India, a three-and-a-half-hour late-night journey. While most passengers accepted meal services, three individuals repeatedly refused offerings from the air hostess, including water and tea. Their unusual stillness and abrupt refusals drew the air hostess’s attention, prompting her to inform the flight captain. Acting on her concerns, the captain alerted customs officials via air traffic control.

Restaurants body cautions members of aggregator disruption in dine-in space
National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) on Sunday cautioned its 500,000-plus restaurant members on what it termed «dangers» of deep discounting on dining-in, monopolising of payment gateways and data control by aggregators such as Swiggy and Zomato. «Deep discounting has caused significant challenges in food delivery; NRAI warns that similar tactics are being employed to capture the dine-in market,» the NRAI said in a detailed advisory, a copy of which was seen by ET. The development could escalate multiple long-standing disputes between India's ₹5.69 lakh crore restaurant sector and food delivery aggregators, which have been clocking healthy growth year-on-year on the back of consumer convenience and last-mile discoverability. Matters of dispute between the two, including allegations by the NRAI of deep discounting, data masking and uneven commissions by the aggregator platforms on deliveries, are currently being examined by the Competition Commission of India (CCI). For table bookings made by customers on aggregator platforms, most restaurants need to pay 4-8% commissions to the latter, which are higher than the 1-1.5% charged by third-party payment gateways, according to the advisory. According to the NRAI, aggregator payment gateways push aggressive discounts and cashbacks to acquire customers, which, it alleged, are at the expense of the restaurants. Third-party gateways include Paytm and BharatPe.
