Replacing rice with other crops could help recover groundwater lost since 2000: Study
rice with other crops could help recover 60-100 cubic kilometres of groundwater lost since 2000 in north India, a study has found. Current cropping patterns — dominated by rice, which relies heavily on groundwater for irrigation — could result in a loss of about 13-43 cubic kilometres of groundwater if warming of the planet continues, a team of researchers, including those from the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, Gujarat, said. The researchers proposed shifting from existing cropping habits by cutting down on cultivating rice as a potential solution for sustaining the fast-depleting resource in a warmer world that threatens food and water security. «Replacing 37 per cent area of rice with other crops can recover 61 to 108 cubic kilometres groundwater compared to 13 to 43 cubic kilometres with current cropping pattern under the 1.5-3 degrees Celsius global warming levels,» the authors wrote in the study accepted for publication in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) Nexus.

Why you shouldn't be eating my pet
Once again, with Donald Trump's departure from the ellipsoid office in 2021, I moved to the nearabouts of Bardhaman, the edge of Kolkata, to be precise. So, you can understand why being a migraine can be such a headache, something completely different from carrying any colonial or socialist hangover. One feature of moving around and resettling is the dietary knocks one may have to take even in this hyper-globalised world. I know you get excellent Korean food at Seoul, the restaurant tucked away in Delhi's deceptively declasse mall Ansal Plaza. And the hari mirch tikka at Pippali on NYC's East 27th Street is impeccable.

"The way FM handled it is shameful": Tamil Nadu CM Stalin lashes out at Sitharaman after row over hotelier's GST quip
Nirmala Sitharaman over a row triggered after the owner of a restaurant chain in Coimbatore reportedly apologised to the Union Finance Minister for his remarks on Goods and Services Tax stating that the BJP leader handled the situation in a «shameful manner.» At an event in Coimbatore attended by Sitharaman, the owner of Sri Annapoorna restaurant had in a jocular way referred to the varying GST rates levied on food items. «Madam, a bun doesn't attract GST, but when cream is applied to make it a cream bun, it attracts 12 per cent GST. Customers now say, 'You bring the bun and cream separately, and I'll make the cream bun,'» Srinivasan told the minister evoking laughter from the crowd. The hotelier, also attempting to inject humour in his remarks referred to how even the hotel's computer system struggles to calculate the various tax rates when families order a variety of items and urged the Union Finance Minister to simplify the GST structure for food, suggesting a uniform rate for all items.

Chef Vikas Khanna’s viral reply to BBC: ‘My sense of hunger came from New York, not Amritsar’— Watch the Video
Chef Vikas Khanna organized large-scale food distribution drives, winning appreciation from many. In an interview with the BBC in 2020, he was asked by an anchor if his sense of hunger comes from India. Khanna responded, “My sense of hunger came from New York.” He explained further but did not elaborate in this particular interaction. The interviewer begins by highlighting Chef Vikas Khanna's achievements, including cooking for the Obamas and co-hosting with Gordon Ramsay. He then contrasts this success with Khanna's humble beginnings, noting his origins in Amritsar, Punjab. The interviewer suggests that Khanna's background from a less affluent family might give him a particular insight into the challenges of living in India. This implies that Khanna's experiences in a small Indian city have provided him with a deep understanding of hunger and poverty, based on the stereotype that everyone in less wealthy parts of India is automatically impoverished and starving.

Lead present in your cinnamon if you use these 12 products in US; Check full list and side effects here
food safety, a new report has revealed one dozen of 36 cinnamon products contain elevated levels of lead. The study, by Consumer Reports, documented levels that were far lower than the amounts discovered last year. The team who revealed alarming details showed 12 items sold at discount stores and ethnic markets contain lead levels reaching 3.5 parts per million. New York, the only state with strict lead standards for spices, has issued a recall for various spices, including curry powder, chili powder, cumin, and five-spice powder, if they contain more than 1 part per million of lead. Consumer Reports recommends discarding any spices that meet or exceed this threshold. Just a quarter teaspoon of any of those products has more lead than you should consume in an entire day, says James Rogers, PhD, the director of food safety research and testing at CR. “If you have one of those products, we think you should throw it away,” he added further.
