India has to grapple with 'some serious issues' affecting religious sentiments, but it continues to play its rightful role: Malaysian PM
Anwar Ibrahim, who is on a state visit to India, stated on Tuesday that India has to grapple with some 'serious issues' concerning minorities and religious sentiments but it continues to play its rightful role. Ibrahim said, «I will not deny the fact that you also have to grapple with some serious issues affecting minorities or religious sentiments. But our hope is that India continues to play its role, rightful role because I mentioned to Prime Minister Modi, that these were the years when Nehru and Zhou Enlai and Sukarno and Nyerere were there standing up for the global south against colonialism and imperialism and to struggle to ensure that we recognize what humanity is about, what freedom is all about, and what dignity of men and women.» The Malaysian PM, who met with Prime Minister Modi earlier in the day, praised India, noting its remarkable intellectual and historical figures. «India has produced outstanding intellects such as Sri Aurobindo and leaders like Gandhi Ji, who played a unique role in the struggle for freedom, justice, and humanity,» he said. «You have intellectual giants who became leaders in their own countries, such as Jawaharlal Nehru and Mohammed Ali Jinnah. India has produced great sages and leaders and is regarded by many of us as a beacon of hope and democracy in the region.

In May, SAIL announced the Work from Other than Workplace (WoW) policy. Under this policy, employees could choose to work from a place other than their normal office/base location.

The ‘we-brought-you-freedom’ story has an expiry date
Through the broken glass Of a library window The burning books Can’t be read. So new ones Will have to be written. —Ian McMillan (@IMcMillan) Over a decade ago, I walked into a small two-storeyed white house in Dhaka. It felt familiar. I’d grown up around houses like that in Kolkata with red oxide floors, black-and-white photographs on the wall, the rooms cool even on a warm afternoon.

Nilesh Shah, MD, Kotak AMC, asks how can we become wealthy with an asset allocation where 93% of savings is not going to deliver real return. Of course, there are complexities and there is worry. But while investing in risk-taking assets like equities, bonds, debentures, and mutual funds, take guidance from experts. With their advice and support, one will be able to invest for real return. So, invest for real return, even though it means taking some risk. What kind of change have you seen in your personal, and professional life that is reflected in India so far as India celebrated its 78th year of independence? Nilesh Shah: My father died very early when I was very young and my mother was always dependent on me for her retirement. She never had enough savings and she was always spending to make us study and help us grow. Hence, she is dependent upon me as her retirement solution. But I can proudly say I have done my retirement solution through my money. That is the change I want to see in every Indian.

Off & online content, apply profit motive
GoI's trying to introduce some element of self-regulation in online content creation. Since a very large part of the information we consume today is being created or processed by online creators, it's right in trying to plug the regulatory arbitrage between legacy and digital platforms. There should ideally be no difference in treatment of freedom of expression available offline and online, including attendant obligations. This would apply more critically to broadcast, especially when it can be done through social media by an individual. Persons broadcasting online for profit should be held to a higher threshold of accountability. This is where things get complicated. The nature of online communication can very well transform personal opinion into a broadcast. Using the profit motive as a differentiator would allow a section of broadcast content online the wider liberty of freedom of expression.

People in power promoting divisive thinking: Congress Prez Kharge
Modi government on Independence Day by alleging that the ruling establishment was promoting divisive thinking and turning constitutional and institutional offices into «puppets», and said the Opposition was committed to protecting the Constitution. On Prime Minister Narendra Modi pitching for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Congress spokespeople said Modi terming the Hindu Code Bill as a «communal code» was like insulting Ambedkar's Constitution. They, however, skirted Ambedkar's advocacy for a UCC across communities and his pronouncements against the amendments brought in the Constituent Assembly to block application of the UCC in the Muslim community, thus limiting it as the Hindu Code. In his address at AICC's Independence Day function, Kharge also questioned RSS and Sangh Parivar's contribution to the freedom movement. «Instead of walking the path shown by them (freedom fighters), the rulers of today are encouraging divisive thinking. They mark 'Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas' (Partition Horrors Remembrance Day) with the intention of spreading hatred. Those who did not participate in the Independence movement give advice to the Congress party and without any contribution want to get counted among the martyrs,» he said.

Independence Day: No, India did not get complete independence in 1947. Here's why
Poorna Swaraj, as was the goal of the Indian National Congress, on August 15, 1947. Jawaharlal Nehru's famous uttering in his Independence Day speech, «At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom», was only partially accurate in describing the occasion. Also Read: Videshi to Swadeshi: Brands that propelled journey towards Atmanirbharta Instead of Poorna Swaraj, India got the dominion status which did not mean an independent country as most of us believe India to have become in 1947. Though India became a self-governing entity, it was still under British control in several ways. Interestingly, the Congress had been against the dominion status yet accepted it, ostensibly because it was to lead to complete independence later but also because the dominion status could have helped the first government, which was not directly elected, take hold of society and economy with the help of prevailing British laws which gave it more power of people.

"Some cannot tolerate India's progress unless it benefits them": PM Modi's indirect dig at opposition in I-Day speech
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an indirect attack on the opposition, said on Wednesday that while the nation is moving forward with a unified resolution, some people cannot «tolerate» the progress. «We are moving forward with the same resolution, but there are some people who cannot tolerate progress or think of India's progress unless it benefits them. They want anarchy. The country needs to protect itself from this handful of pessimistic people,» the Prime Minister said during his address from the Red Fort on the occasion of the 78th Independence Day. PM Modi noted that there are both external and internal challenges, and more such challenges are bound to come. «I want to say to such forces that India's development will not pose a threat to anyone. The world should not worry seeing India's development,» he added.
