India House', on the freedom fighters who came together in the building. The pan-Indian historical drama will star Nikhil Siddhartha in the lead role, with Anupam Kher portraying the character of Shyamji Krishna Varma, the man who had bought the building and started the hostel.
How India House came up
In 2010, a memorial in the beach town of Mandvi in the Kachchh district of Gujarat, captured attention with its Victorian architecture and red brick construction. The Gujarat government had inaugurated a life-size replica of London’s India House and rechristened it Kranti Teerth to honor Shyamji Krishna Varma's contribution to India's freedom movement. The replica aimed to raise awareness among the youth about his significant role in the struggle for freedom.
Varma founded India House in 1905 at 65 Cromwell Avenue, Highgate in London. The inauguration was conducted by Henry Hyndman, an English writer and founder of the Social Democratic Federation. Other notable attendees included Dadabhai Naoroji, Bhikaiji Cama and Charlotte Despard. Initially, the building was intended to provide boarding accommodations for Indian students who faced difficulties finding housing in London amidst racial attacks from Britishers. Over time, it became a hub of nationalistic activity under Varma's leadership and also served as the headquarters of Indian Home Rule Society, founded by Varma, which promoted the cause of self-rule for Indians in British India but didn't agree with the moderate approach of the Congress.
