Good market access offered on both sides, says UK on India FTA talks
UK government has said as Indian negotiators are in London this week to continue discussions with their British counterparts. During a debate in the House of Lords this week, UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron was addressing questions from British peers on the current state of freedom of religion or belief in India. The recent restructuring of the BBC to create a new Indian-owned entity in order to comply with the country's foreign direct investment (FDI) rules was flagged by Liberal Democrat peer Lord Jeremy Purvis, who questioned the level of market access being offered to India in the field of media, data and telecoms as part of the FTA negotiations. «My understanding of where we are with the trade deal is that good market access has been offered on both sides, but not quite enough yet to secure a deal. It is important with such trade deals, as you only really get one proper shot at it, to make sure that it is a good enough deal that will be welcomed by industry leaders here in the UK as offering real market access,» said Lord Cameron.

National Conference names Omar Abdullah as Baramulla Lok Sabha candidate
Omar Abdullah is contesting Lok Sabha elections from Baramulla constituency of northern Kashmir and his colleague a prominent Shia leader Aga Ruhulla will contest from Srinagar constituency. Abdullah dared the BJP to field its candidates directly on three seats in the Valley and not support the proxies and was confident that if the BJP candidates won’t lose their security deposit, he will quit politics. The NC’s announcement has made the contest interesting as Sajad Lone of People’s Conference is fighting from Baramulla constituency, who enjoys support from Altaf Bukhari of Apni Party while People’s Democratic Party youth leader Waheed Para is fighting from Srinagar. “Our fight is not against any candidate or individual in north Kashmir. My fight is against those powers who are supporting this candidate from behind. Central government and the BJP is focussing on north Kashmir and I want to defeat these forces in north Kashmir. Now we know they are openly BJP candidates. They are openly dancing to the tunes of BJP ,” said Abdullah. The NC leader claimed that the BJP leader Tarun Chugh had recently come to meet Bukhari at his home in Srinagar and Lone was summoned there and given directions. “Let BJP field its candidates directly here and seek votes in the name of BJP and what they did here. See how many votes they will garner. Stop using A team, B team and C team here. If you have done much then please field BJP candidates and if they don't lose their security deposit i will quit politics,” he said.

Canada retrenches dozens of Indian staffers from diplomatic missions in India
Canada has recently decreased the number of Indian staff members in its diplomatic missions across India due to a shortage of Canadian personnel necessary for the effective management of in-country operations. This move comes in response to India's expulsion of 41 Canadian diplomats last year, which aimed to achieve parity in diplomatic presence. Consequently, Canada had ceased in-person operations at its consulates in Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Bengaluru. While the exact number of retrenched employees remains undisclosed, it is understood to be less than 100. Confirming the staff reductions, a media relations official at the high commission expressed regret over the necessity of this decision, citing the departure of Canadian staff last year. «We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to our local staff in India for their resilience, dedication, and service. Canada remains committed to providing essential services to Canadians in India, including consular support and facilitating trade and business development, to uphold the longstanding ties between our two nations,» stated the official, noting that Canada's visa application centers in India continue to operate normally.
