Google buys cybersecurity firm Wiz for $32 billion: Here are other big acquisitions by Alphabet
Alphabet will be acquiring cybersecurity startup Wiz for $32 billion. This is Alphabet’s largest-ever deal as it seeks to enhance cloud computing security. The price of the acquisition, announced on Tuesday, is significantly higher than the $23 billion Google had initially offered for Wiz in 2023. The all-cash acquisition is expected to strengthen Google Cloud’s security capabilities against rivals Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. The 2023 deal had fallen through over antitrust concerns. This led the cybersecurity startup to shift its focus towards an initial public offering (IPO) and boosting recurring revenue. However, with shifting regulatory policies and Wall Street’s optimism about a more business-friendly environment under Donald Trump, Google successfully revived and completed the deal.

NPCI looking to stop cons ‘pulling’ a fast one via UPI
NPCI) is working to phase out ‘collect calls’ for merchant payments as part of the government’s efforts to combat online frauds via the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), two bankers familiar with the matter said. A collect call is a ‘pull’ transaction, where a merchant initiates a payment request to the customer. Given that merchants have a higher degree of control over these, there is a more chance of fraud. Authorities are instead encouraging ‘push’ transactions, where the customer initiates the payment by scanning a QR code or through other means.

Indian shapewear brands clamour to tighten your waist and cinch you, inch by inch
The success stories of Spanx and Skims have made shapewear quite hip—and it’s true for India, too. A Google search for “shapewear in India” results in hundreds of options, including shapewear specialists like Dermawear, startups like ButtChique and The Active Story that started in 2020 and 2023, respectively, intimatewear labels like Nykd by Nykaa Fashion, older brands like Zivame and Clovia, international brands like Marks & Spencer and smaller brands in online marketplaces. There are tummy tuckers, sari shapewear, bodysuits, shaping dresses, 4-in-1 shapers for the stomach, hips, back and thighs, and colours that go beyond the beige, with prices starting from `250 to `7,000. So, is everyone wearing shapewear? Not as many as should, says Abhishek K Kumar, CEO of Dermawear. “In comparison to the global usage of such products, we have only scratched the surface. India still has a long way to go to adapt shapewear in daily life, which underscores the opportunity the market presents.” He that is not keen on loose petticoats and pinching drawstrings. It entered the shapewear segment with high-compression garments targeting occasion wear; that is close to 10% of its portfolio now. She says, “Today, shapewear has moved from thicker fabrics to high-compression thin fabrics. It is also being looked at beyond occasion wear.” She says people now want outerwear with shaping function, like a knit top that shapes the abdomen.

H-1B applications plunge in India’s tech hub Hyderabad as costs rise and US tightens norms
H-1B visa applications has dropped significantly this year, according to local agents and consultancies in Hyderabad. The fall in demand comes as the US government has raised the application fee and implemented stricter filing rules. Hyderabad, known as a major hub for global technology companies, houses offices of several multinational firms such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Oracle. The city has been a key contributor to India’s IT exports and a large base for professionals seeking US work visas like H-1B. However, this year, local consultancies report a drastic decline in applications, reflecting growing concerns among professionals. Arun Teja Bukkaparapu, who runs a consultancy in Hyderabad, told TOI's Nirupa Vatyam, «I have not even received a single call about H-1B filing until now.» He pointed out that increasing uncertainty over US jobs, along with a steep hike in the application fee from USD 10 to USD 215, has discouraged many potential applicants.

H-1B visa: How the US policy shift may not rock the boat for Indian engineers
H-1B visa policies have raised considerable concern among Indian IT professionals aspiring to work in the United States. However, the impact on Indian engineers and tech specialists may not be as drastic as expected. This is due to two main factors: a shortage of skilled American workers in specialized technical fields and an increasing emphasis by tech giants like Microsoft and Google on tapping into Indian engineering talent to lead the next phase of technological advancement, particularly in Artificial Intelligence (AI) development. Indian professionals have traditionally made up the majority of H-1B visa recipients. Although regulatory changes will impact Indian applicants, various factors indicate that the consequences may not be as severe as expected, resulting in fewer opportunities for Indian engineers, IT experts, and other skilled professionals in critical industries.
