Hollywood actor spends Rs 8 crore to pay off 900 people's debts after Tata Steel shuts shop in Wales. Who is Michael Sheen?
Michael Sheen has hit headlines for paying off 900 people’s debt after Tata Steel shut down its last blast furnace in Port Talbot. As per a BBC report, the ‘Twilight’ actor embarked on a mission to alleviate financial burdens by establishing a company dedicated to purchasing and erasing debt for 900 individuals in South Wales. His philanthropic initiative is the focus of an upcoming Channel 4 documentary titled Michael Sheen’s Secret Million Pound Giveaway, scheduled to premiere next week. The program aims to shed light on how banks and financial institutions often exploit economically disadvantaged individuals for profit. Sheen disclosed that he remained unaware of the specific identities of those whose debts he cleared, knowing only their geographical location and the type of financial obligation they held. He emphasized, «I would never know who they are. Even now, I still don't know their identities.» Using £100,000 of his personal savings, the actor successfully established a debt acquisition company, which enabled him to purchase £1 million worth of outstanding loans. Initially unfamiliar with the intricate workings of the debt industry, Sheen admitted, «At first, I had no understanding of how this unusual system operated, but it felt like the right thing to do.»

Prefer largecaps now but one can be stock-specific in small and midcaps: Shibani Sircar Kurian
Shibani Sircar Kurian, Senior EVP, Sr. Fund Manager & Head -Equity Research, Kotak AMC, says that a considerable number of stocks are trading almost 50% lower than their 52-week high. So, some degree of valuation comfort is coming in. We are approaching this market by looking at stocks with earning visibility. Largecaps continue to offer better risk-reward as compared to mid and smallcaps as a pack. However, within mid and smallcaps, there are definite points of opportunity and we would use these corrections to look at these particular segments and stock in terms of allocation. Help us with your take on the markets because some are calling out a near-term bottom in place and also trying to look out for some more opportunities. We saw a bit of a rebound on Wednesday. What is your reading? Shibani Sircar Kurian: Since December of last year, the volatility has been on the back of global as well as domestic factors and some of these uncertainties still remain. However, what we must also understand is that when we look at markets, the Nifty itself has corrected almost 13-14% from its highs. Similarly, the midcap and smallcap indices have seen a greater correction. More importantly, at a stock level, the correction has been even steeper than what the headline indices seem to suggest.

India’s tariffs WTO-compliant, exports to US have low local value add: GTRI
local value addition and this must be considered when assessing trade balances between the two countries, think tank GTRI said Sunday. iPhones, solar panels, diamonds and petrochemicals are sectors where local value addition in exported goods and contribute far less to India's economy than their headline figures suggest, it said and urged the government to convey to the US administration that India’s import duties are in compliance with the global trade rules. India has the option to retaliate to the US’ proposed reciprocal tariffs by raising duties on certain American goods, taxing their digital firms or issuing compulsory licenses for patented drugs, GTRI said but cautioned that such countermeasures would provoke further action by Washington, escalating into a trade war that could significantly hurt India.

Manu Joseph: How entertainment got boring in the age of streaming
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. A few weeks ago, I read a headline in The Guardian: “Is Netflix deliberately dumbing down TV so people can watch while scrolling?" I had to read the rest of the article, even though I knew that if a newspaper asks a question in the headline, it means it doesn’t know the answer—otherwise, the answer would be the headline. Also, theories about the complex manipulation of human behaviour by a company are usually exaggerations.
