EVs can’t fix a global epidemic of ‘car harm,’ study finds
Electric vehicles promise cleaner air and less climate pollution. But a new analysis suggests that even a global all-EV fleet would perpetuate some of the most devastating impacts of cars and auto infrastructure. The modern world moves itself around in roughly 2 billion motor vehicles, 65% of which are cars. That’s 16 automobiles for every 100 people, but the rate of car ownership is much higher in richer industrialized countries, where cars give shape to cities and set the patterns of daily life. This fleet requires substantial, ongoing investment in roads and highways, car storage (or “parking,” in the jargon), oil exploration and fuel production, metals mining and manufacturing, insurance and much more. All of these activities levy regular costs in the form of fatalities and injuries as well as greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change. A comprehensive review published last month provides a litany of what the authors call “car harm,” in estimated global totals of death, injury, disease and other miseries, over the course of automotive history. In part because the system “prioritises speed over safety,” as the authors put it, motor vehicles are responsible for one out of 34 deaths, or 1.7 million people every year, either directly or through pollution.

India-Japan to give momentum to defence & investment ties
defence partnership, including in the area of defence equipment while agreeing for wider participation of Japanese SMEs in India’s growth story. The two sides also reviewed their defence and economic partnership at the foreign minister-level strategic dialogue held in Tokyo. “We have made good progress in our defence and security relations, which we both welcomed. Today, just as we are meeting here in Tokyo, the Indian Army is conducting a joint exercise with the Japanese Self Defence Force, in Rajasthan. The three branches of our military and Coast Guard are productively engaged with their Japanese counterparts, with greater ease through the newly operationalised reciprocal partnership arrangement. There have been exchanges about cooperation possibilities in the areas of jointness, and new domains like cyber and space. We also took stock of the progress in our defence equipment and technology cooperation framework,” Jaishankar said in his remarks to the press following the meeting.

BJP banking on Dalits to make a dent in Congress pocket borough
BJP is banking on the backing of Dalits, the largest voting bloc in Raebareli Lok Sabha constituency, to win the elusive Congress bastion in the upcoming general elections. After breaching Amethi, one of the Nehru-Gandhi family's two bastions, in the 2019 election, BJP has its eyes set on bagging Raebareli this time. Its focus on the seat was also evident in its move to get Samajwadi Party MLA from Unchahar in Raebareli, Manoj Pandey, to cross-vote for BJP candidate in the Rajya Sabha polls, a development which is being seen as a prelude to Pandey joining BJP and adding to the Dalit base with his Brahmin following. Raebareli has a total of 1.8 million voters, 34% of which are Dalits. Last year, BJP appointed Buddhilal Pasi, a Pasi Dalit, as its district chief, following a rejig of its district presidents. Brahmins account for 13-14% of the voters. In both 2014 and 2019 elections, BJP increased its vote share by about 17% over the previous election, gaining 34% share over 10 years. The Congress, on the other hand, lost about 17% share over the same time. «I come from the Pasi community and can assure the community alone will be enough to make BJP win in the seat,» Pasi told ET.
