TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee urges doctors to call off 'cease work'
Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday urged junior doctors to end their agitation, since most of their demands were accepted by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The medics have been on 'cease work' since August 9, when the body of a postgraduate trainee, who was raped and murdered, was found in the seminar room of state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. They were demanding justice for the victim and stronger security measures in medical establishments. «As a gesture of goodwill, the doctors should consider calling off the strike and work collaboratively with the West Bengal government to serve the needs of the people and expedite the implementation of the task force's initiatives to ensure these changes are promptly executed,» Banerjee said. The TMC national general secretary also said it is crucial to hold the CBI accountable and ensure no perpetrators are spared, with swift punishment handed down at the earliest opportunity.

Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala: 175 people exposed, says Health Minister as she leads efforts to curb spread
health minister has reported that 175 individuals in Malappuram district have been identified in connection with the recent Nipah virus outbreak. Among these, 74 are healthcare workers. Of the 175 individuals, 126 are on the primary contact list, with 104 considered high-risk, while 49 are secondary contacts. Authorities are treating ten people at Manjeri Medical College Hospital. Testing is underway for 13 individuals, with results pending. This follows the death of a 24-year-old man from Nipah virus on September 9. Previous outbreaks since 2018 have already affected the state, with the first death of 2024 recorded on July 21. Bats in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Idukki, Malappuram, and Ernakulam districts have been found carrying Nipah virus antibodies. Fruit bats naturally host the virus, which can then spread to humans, leading to person-to-person transmission.

RG Kar issue: Junior doctors continue sit-in outside health department office amid rain
junior doctors in West Bengal on Sunday said they remain steadfast in their resolve to pursue justice for the medic raped and murdered at the RG Kar hospital, a day after another attempt to resolve the impasse with the state government fell through. Amid persistent rain, the protesting doctors continued their sit-in outside 'Swasthya Bhavan', the state health department headquarters in Salt Lake, for the sixth consecutive day. «We are steadfast in our resolve to seek justice for our sister, no matter the adversity. We have spent nights on the streets in harsh conditions and inclement weather despite some of us not feeling well,» an agitating junior medic said. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had on Saturday made a surprise visit to the site where the doctors were protesting and assured them that their demands would be addressed, but the proposed meeting fell through, with the protesters claiming that they were asked to leave «unceremoniously» after waiting for three hours at the gates of the CM's residence.
