Rebecca Cheptegei is in critical condition in a Kenyan hospital after being allegedly doused with petrol and set on fire by her former boyfriend. The attack occurred on Sunday at her home in Endebess, western Kenya, where she had been training. Both individuals are undergoing treatment for severe burns at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret. Local police are investigating the incident, which is part of a worrying trend of violence against female athletes in Kenya. Cheptegei, 33, had returned home from church with her two children when the incident took place. According to local police chief Jeremiah ole Kosiom, neighbors rescued her after hearing a quarrel outside the house, during which the alleged attacker poured a liquid on her before setting her ablaze. The attacker also sustained serious burns during the altercation. «The couple were heard quarrelling outside their house. During the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on the woman before burning her,» Kosiom explained to journalists.

West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a new bill, the Aparajita Women & Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024, even as the opposition continued their clamour for chief minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation. Law minister Moloy Ghatak introduced the new Bill. «The new bill includes certain amendments and aims to expedite investigation, ensure fast justice delivery and enhanced punishment,» Mamata Banerjee said in the House. Speaking on the bill, which seeks to make amendments in relevant provisions under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012, Mamata Banerjee said, «It was a matter of shame that the Prime Minister could not do what her government did». Demanding the resignation of the PM and the Union home minister, Banerjee said: «I have written two letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and wanted a stringent law on rape but there was no reply from the PM.»

MHA) has moved the Supreme Court seeking better accommodation and facilities for the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel stationed at the RG Kar Hospital and Medical College and hostels of resident doctors. In an applicationbefore the Supreme Court, the MHA argued that due to the long distance between the accommodation place and the RG Kar Hospital, the security personnel have been facing difficulties in ensuring efficient administration and prompt mobility during contingencies. The MHA has sought for the initiation of contempt proceedings against West Bengal officials in violation of the orders of August 20 and 22 in the event of failure to cooperate with the needs of the CISF troops.

The application said that duty personnel are facing a lot of difficulties in performing duties due to non-availability of accommodation, security gadgets and paucity of transportation. Centre, in its application in the Supreme Court, was seeking direction to West Bengal to extend full co-operation to the CISF and ensure full compliance, in letter and spirit, of the order dated August 20 or face contempt proceedings for wilful non-compliance of the order.

Sandip Ghosh was remanded in eight-day police custody by Alipore Judges Court on Tuesday. This followed his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on charges of financial misconduct. Three others were also detained alongside Ghosh, including his security guard and two vendors who supplied materials to the hospital. The arrest is connected to the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the body of a female medic, a victim of rape and murder, was discovered on August 9. The CBI's investigation stems from the Calcutta High Court's August 23 order, transferring the case from a state-formed Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the federal agency. Ghosh was the second person arrested in connection with this case, following the earlier detention of a civic volunteer by the Kolkata Police. The opposition BJP asserted that this development exposed efforts by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government to cover up the former principal's wrongdoings. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh acknowledged that the state health department could have acted sooner to avoid the current situation.

Realty developer Omaxe Group has lined up Rs 2,500 crore to develop a sport centric project in Delhi’s Dwarka, company’s managing director Mohit Goel told ET. Calcutta High Court on Monday asked the West Bengal government to produce all documents related to the arrest of four persons in connection with the August 27 march to state secretariat Nabanna to protest the rape-murder of a doctor in R G Kar hospital. The court questioned the justification for their arrest and subsequent release 24 hours later, and enquired whether proper procedures were followed by police in detaining them. The state told the court that it was a preventive arrest on part of the Howrah city police, who anticipated that the persons might cause serious disturbances during the protest march to Nabanna under the banner of 'Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj'. Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj questioned what specific disturbances were anticipated and why the persons were released 24 hours ahead of the August 27 protest march.
