PE/VC stake sales in Indian IPOs hit four-year high even as their market share shrinks to a decade low
In 2025, private equity and venture capital firms extracted the largest sum of cash from India’s initial public offerings (IPOs) in four years, even as their share in the country’s primary market shrank to its lowest in at least a decade. While these investors offloaded ₹20,643 crore worth of stock in 2025, they backed fewer than one in five listings, compared to around one in four in 2024 and around one in three in 2023.According to market statistics compiled by data intelligence firm Prime Database, the value of PE/VC-backed IPO stake sales this year was the highest since the all-time high of ₹31,684 crore in 2021, which came during a period of high global liquidity and a surge in technology listings following the covid pandemic.Despite the increase in the absolute value of exits, the proportion of PE/VC-backed companies within the broader IPO landscape has declined steadily over the past decade.

How India’s health insurance choices evolved in 2025
₹14.5 lakh in the pre-GST phase to nearly ₹19 lakh post the reform. This increase reflected a deliberate reassessment of adequacy rather than incremental upgrades. For years, health covers priced below ₹10 lakh have dominated new purchases, largely due to price sensitivity and a limited understanding of hospital costs.

Tax, NPS, labour codes: How 2025's changes will affect your wallet in 2026
The year 2025 emerged as a pivotal year for household finances—marked by significant changes like a reduction in mandatory annuitization in the National Pension System (NPS), lower income tax rates, GST slab rationalization, and the introduction of new labour codes—laying the groundwork for how Indians will plan, save, and invest in 2026.For instance, the new tax regime has emerged as the obvious choice for most taxpayers following the increase in the rebate limit to ₹12 lakh. To make the old regime work, taxpayers would now need to claim deductions of over ₹8 lakh a year—a tough target given the ₹1.5 lakh cap under Section 80C and no change in the ₹50,000 standard deduction for years.

No ice, no toothpaste: Govt rolls out evidence-based treatment protocols for burn injuries
New Delhi: To reduce India’s high burn-related mortality rates and standardise care across hospitals, the Centre has issued comprehensive treatment guidelines that formalise first-aid practices and discourage the use of common household remedies, according to two officials and a document seen by Mint. The development assumes significance given the rising burn injuries—an estimated 6-7 million injuries annually and around 150,000 deaths each year—with women and children disproportionately affected due to cooking fires and flammable liquids. The new framework, to be adopted by health centres with immediate effect, seeks to replace India’s fragmented, hospital-specific burn care protocols with a uniform, evidence-based system ranging from first responders, primary health centres (PHCs) and tertiary hospitals. The guidelines organise burn care into four levels—pre-hospital, primary, secondary and tertiary—clearly outlining responsibilities at each stage to reduce delays, inappropriate treatment and avoidable complications. They address a critical gap where healthcare professionals often relied on a mix of personal expertise and conflicting protocols due to resource constraints. The effectiveness of burn care in India has been constrained by chronic shortages of trained personnel, essential supplies and specialised equipment, gaps that are most acute in resource-limited settings, impacting patient recovery and complication rates."Standard treatment guidelines are vital because medical science is evidence-based, yet currently, individual hospitals often follow disparate protocols. It is crucial to collate best practices to ensure uniformity," said Dr.

Last rights: The right to die with dignity should be upheld both in letter and spirit
David Michael Malone, my friend and mentor, elected to die with dignity on 24 November at the age of 71. The veteran scholar-diplomat—a former Canadian high commissioner to India—had been diagnosed with prostate cancer a couple of years ago and Alzheimer’s disease more recently. He was spared the pain but did not want to suffer the loss of memory and degradation of the quality of life that comes with Alzheimer’s. He invoked Canada’s right to die when he was still in control of his mental faculties and passed away a day after spending an enjoyable evening out with his close friends. As much as I will miss his long-distance friendship and sage advice, I was not unhappy to see him depart the way he did.

Punjab farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal ends his indefinite hunger strike
Punjab farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal on Sunday ended his indefinite fast, which he had started on November 26 last year to press for various demands of agitating farmers including a legal guarantee on the minimum support price for crops. The announcement came a day after Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu appealed to him to end his fast-unto-death. Dallewal announced that he was ending his indefinite fast at a 'Kisan Mahapanchayat' organised at Sirhind in Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab. «You (farmers) all have asked me to end the fast unto death. I am indebted to you for taking care of the agitation. I respect your sentiments. I accept your order,» said Dallewal while addressing the farmers' gathering. Dallewal is a senior leader of a joint forum of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM). He began his indefinite hunger strike on November 26 last year to press the Centre to accept the farmers' demands.

Indians are quitting the safety net of health insurance; GST and high premiums are only part of the problem
health insurance market: many individuals are choosing to quit their health insurance policies. While high premiums and the introduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on premiums are often cited as reasons, these financial pressures alone do not fully explain why people are opting out. It is the combination of these costs with a surge in claim rejections and the feeling of inadequate coverage that is leading many to reconsider their insurance choices.
