Private hospitals join doctors' strike in Delhi, shut down OPDs
doctors' strike over the alleged rape and killing of one of their colleagues in a Kolkata hospital is gaining momentum as major private hospitals in Delhi joined the protest on Friday, shutting down their OPDs, elective surgeries and IPD services. Resident doctors in the capital have been on an indefinite strike since Monday. As the strike entered its sixth day on Friday, private hospitals also joined the protest alongside government hospitals. Hospitals like Sir Ganga Ram, Fortis and Apollo have halted their OPD, elective surgeries and IPD services. Dr Ajay Swaroop, chairman of the Board of Management at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said, «We have declared a complete shutdown of OPD, elective OTs and IPD work. Unfortunately, I believe that protests and discontinuation of duties have now become necessary to pressure the authorities and expedite the investigation process, so that justice is not delayed.»

cash transactions in business sectors like hotels, luxury brand sales, hospitals and IVF clinics need to be checked in a «non-intrusive» manner, the CBDT has asked the I-T department. The apex body for direct taxes administration in the country — the Central Board of Direct Taxes — has also asked the tax department to undertake «concerted efforts» to recover arrear demands which have been witnessing a «steep rise» since the last financial year. The CBDT recently issued an annual action plan dossier called the central action plan (CAP) 2024-25. Senior officials told PTI that transactions over Rs 2 lakh in cash were required to be reported through a statement of financial transaction (SFT) by financial institutions but that was not happening.

BJP protests against vandalism, Mamata Banerjee leads counter rally demanding speedy trial
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday blamed the BJP and CPI-M for vandalism at the RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, aiming to destroy evidence in the seminar hall of the Emergency building on August 14 midnight. Meanwhile, BJP, SUCI, students of various colleges and universities protested throughout the day and demanded justice for the medical student who was raped and murdered at the hospital. Blaming both Left and BJP (Baam-Ram) for vandalism and ransacking at the RG Kar Hospital, she claimed that infrastructure worth ₹50 to 100 crore has been damaged by the Left-BJP miscreants. Reacting sharply, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar, who was also protesting over the RG Kar vandalism issue today, said, «I challenge the chief minister, if she can prove BJP's involvement in the vandalism, we will leave politics.» However, asked about the miscreants' identity, who were seen heading to the seminar hall in a purported video, Commissioner of Police Vineet Goyel said, «Nothing has been found as of now. We are examining them.» Kolkata Police has arrested 25 persons in connection with the vandalism.

RG Kar incident: 25 people held for vandalising property, police say
Kolkata Police in connection with the RG Kar vandalism incident, Police Commissioner Vineet Goyel said on Friday. He urged all citizens and all political parties to come up with information about the miscreants behind the vandalism. Goyel urged the media and the people to not pay heed to the rumour mongering which has been going on over the rape and murder of a PG medical student of the hospital and the vandalism incident. The Police Commissioner accepted that there was «failure of assessment» about the crowd size on the 'Reclaim the Night' which was meant to be peaceful. He said, «So many women and people had come from various parts of the city and it was difficult to assess the size of the crowd.» «If you call it a failure of assessment, yes it was. The entire protest was supposed to be peaceful. We are human beings. We also make assessments based on available resources. There was so much security in the location. ACP-I was also present,» he said. " During the 'Reclaim the Night' protest, there were gatherings and spontaneous crowds which had come, with no specific leaders. How many people will gather could not be assessed. We had to deploy our resources throughout the city while a fairly large contingent had assembled at the RG Kar hospital," the Commissioner said.

Tried to be as transparent as possible in our probe: Kolkata CP Vineet Goel on doctor's rape-murder
Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel on Friday asserted that the force was not trying to shield anyone and it tried to be as transparent as possible in the probe into the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at a state-run hospital here. Addressing a press conference, Goel also admitted that despite «sufficient security presence», the police did not expect the protesting crowd to turn violent outside RG Kar Hospital premises in the early hours of August 15, and were initially caught off-guard when a deputy commissioner-ranked officer got injured. The CP said that Kolkata Police has handed over all evidence, including videographed post-mortem to the CBI, which is investigating the case upon orders of the Calcutta High Court. «We are not shielding anyone, and police tried to be as transparent as possible in our probe. We have handed over all evidence related to the case to the CBI. Have faith in the central probe agency,» he said.

Mamata Banerjee blames Left, BJP for hospital vandalism, to lead protest rally today
Mamata Banerjee said on Friday that 'Ram and Baam' (BJP-CPIM) were responsible for creating the mayhem at RG Kar Hospital on Wednesday night. «Whatever I have seen in the videos...some had the national flag, who are from the BJP, while someone was carrying a DYFI flag,» she said, speaking on the attack at the hospital. She added that fake videos were doing the rounds on social media and urged all to be cautious about such videos. «I am not blaming the students. Some outsider political party elements 'Baam and Ram' (Left and BJP) have come together to make the disturbance. The incident is unfortunate. We will hold a protest procession to demand capital punishment of the accused,» Banerjee said.
