LIC mulls entering health insurance, explores acquisition opportunities
Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) is contemplating a foray into the health insurance sector and is currently assessing potential acquisition prospects, reported The Times of India quoting LIC chairman Siddhartha Mohanty. The move comes amid a proposal to allow composite insurance companies in the sector. «There is an expectation that composite licences may be permitted by the new govt, and we have done some internal groundwork. While we lack expertise in general insurance, we are interested in health insurance and are also considering opportunities for inorganic growth,» said LIC chairman Siddhartha Mohanty. In February 2024, a parliamentary committee recommended the implementation of composite insurance licenses to reduce expenses and regulatory burdens for insurance providers. At present, life insurance companies are restricted to offering extended health insurance benefits. Enabling life insurance companies to furnish hospitalization and indemnity coverage would necessitate an amendment to the Insurance Act.

EQT's growth fund to pursue deals of $50m-250m in India
investment group EQT will now look at deals of $50 million-250 million in India from its newly raised $1.6 billion BPEA EQT Mid-Market Growth Partnership (MMG Fund). The new fund, in addition to the large-cap buyout Asia fund, will look at deals primarily in closely held companies. «As the flagship fund becomes bigger, there is that opportunity in the mid-market space with a ticket size of between $50 million and $250 million that is getting left out,» Hari Gopalakrishnan, partner, EQT, told ET. «So, we are targeting that space with this mid-market strategy. We set out to raise $750 million, but the demand was quite strong. So, we ended up raising twice what we expected.»

Ajit Pawar, 2 NCP leaders face 'interference' allegations Pune porsche accident case
Ajit Pawar, one MLA and one state minister from his faction of the NCP are under fire over allegations that they «interfered» with the police case against the drunk minor son of a Pune builder who killed two people with his car on May 19. Ajit Pawar is alleged to have made a call to the Pune Police Commissioner to go «soft» on the minor son of Vishal Agarwal after his arrest for running his car over two people, killing them on the spot. Responding to the allegations, Ajit Pawar, who is also the Guardian Minister of Pune, did not deny making the call to the police commissioner but claimed that it was only to ensure that the police did not succumb to pressure as the son of a «rich person» was involved. «If any such incident happens and if you are the guardian minister, then one would call up the police commissioner. So, I told him (Pune Police commissioner) to not succumb to any pressure as a rich person's family was involved. There was a possibility of different kinds of pressure on police,» said Pawar.

Karnataka govt to pay Rs 80 lakh hotel bill of PM Modi's stay in Mysuru: Minister
Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre on Monday said the state government will pay the hospitality bill of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had come to Mysuru in April last year to commemorate 50 years of Project Tiger, which runs up to Rs 80 lakh. In a statement, the minister's office said it is a tradition of the state government to host dignitaries like the Prime Minister and the President when they come. But due to Assembly elections in Karnataka in April last year, the state government was not involved in planning of the programme (Project Tiger) since the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was in force. Speaking to reporters, the minister said that the prime minister had visited Myrusu-Bandipur on the eve of commemoration of 50 years of Project Tiger. At that point of time, the MCC was in force. Elections were declared. So, it was purely a Central government programme. Initially, they had planned to spend around Rs 3 crore but the expenditure incurred was around 6.33 crore. So, balance 3.3 crore has to come from the National Tiger Conservation Authority. «The state government's forest department had written to them (authority). They informed that the hotel bill (Rs 80 lakh) should be reimbursed by the state government and we have decided to reimburse. So, there is no issue,» he added.
