(Reuters) — Huawei Technologies and China's top chipmaker SMIC have built an advanced 7-nanometer processor to power its latest smartphone, according to a teardown report by analysis firm TechInsights.

Trade, investment, people-to-people links as well as regional and international security are among the issues up for discussion in next Thursday's talks, Foreign Minster Penny Wong's office said. The high-level dialogue had been held annually from 2014 until it was stopped in 2020. In a statement, Wong added that the talks represent 'another step towards increasing bilateral engagement and stabilising our relationship with China,' Former trade minister Craig Emerson will head the Australian delegation, which also includes their former foreign affairs minister Julie Bishop.

Chinese smartphone brand Honor is returning to the Indian market this September in a new avatar. The brand, earlier owned by Huawei, is being licensed by Gurugram-based PSAV Global, said a senior company executive. PSAV Global will raise ₹1,000 crore in domestic loans to establish its operations in the country.

Honor had stopped selling its smartphones in India and reportedly retreated last year amid limited marketing budget and less prudent portfolio management. «India was never a focus market for the Huawei Technologies-owned Honor until 2020 — when it was forced to spin-off the brand and reassess strategy,» said Neil Shah, vice president at Counterpoint Research.

IT hardware industry is increasingly concerned about what could be New Delhi’s definition of “trusted hardware”, with the Centre stressing that imposition of import curbs on laptops, tablets and servers is primarily due to national security reasons. Industry executives say that while the government has been successful in restricting Chinese players Huawei and ZTE from participating in India’s 5G rollout after adoption of the “trusted sources” approach, replicating the same for IT hardware won’t be feasible. That’s because unlike telecom equipment, laptops/tablets are consumer devices. More importantly, more than 80% of the market is controlled by non-Chinese firms belonging to the US, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, which are already trusted trade partners of India, said industry executives. Lenovo is the only Chinese firm. Under India’s new rules for security of mobile networks, telcos are mandated to buy network equipment only from entities labelled by the National Cyber Security Coordinator as a ‘trusted source’ and product designated as a ‘trusted’ one.

Honor, previously a Huawei spin-off brand, is set to make its India comeback in the coming days. The brand which exited the Indian smartphone space in 2020, roughly around the same time it was sold to Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology in the aftermath of US sanctions on parent company Huawei that restricted the sale of hardware components to it by American firms, is re-entering the market under the leadership of Realme co-founder Madhav Sheth who quit in June after a 5-year-long stint at the Oppo offshoot.

Realme, Madhav Sheth, also confirmed his involvement in this venture. Now, Honor Tech India has officially declared its intention to re-enter the Indian smartphone market. The company is preparing to unveil their initial device in the country after a hiatus of over three years.
