Meteorites from Mars help scientists understand the red planet's interior
By James Day, University of California, San Diego San Diego: Of the more than 74,000 known meteorites — rocks that fall to Earth from asteroids or planets colliding together — only 385 or so stones came from the planet Mars. It's not that hard for scientists to work out that these meteorites come from Mars. Various landers and rovers have been exploring Mars' surface for decades. Some of the early missions — the Viking landers — had the equipment to measure the composition of the planet's atmosphere. Scientists have shown that you can see this unique Martian atmospheric composition reflected in some of these meteorites. Mars also has unique oxygen. Everything on Earth, including humans and the air we breathe, is made up of a specific composition of the three isotopes of the element oxygen: oxygen-16, oxygen-17 and oxygen-18. But Mars has an entirely different composition — it's like a geochemical fingerprint for being Martian.

Govt mulls handing over MTNL operations to BSNL; merger unlikely
government is considering the option of handing over operations of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) to BSNL through an agreement, instead of pursuing a merger route, a source privy to the development said. A final call on this is likely to be taken in a month's time. The source said the option of handing over debt-laden MTNL's operations to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) through an agreement is being looked into. The source said that given MTNL's high debt, a merger with BSNL was not a favourable option. Once the decision is taken, the proposal would be placed before the Committee of Secretaries, and thereafter taken to the Cabinet.

governance and bring about a paradigm shift in citizen-centric delivery of services. Imagine a student applying for college admissions. Budget 2024 needs to decide if faceless assessment is revolutionising tax landscape or creating hurdles?
Budget Expectations: As India eagerly anticipates the Union Budget 2024, one area of keen interest for taxpayers, especially corporates, is the refinement of the faceless assessment scheme. Despite its noble intentions and innovative approach, the implementation of the faceless assessment scheme has encountered several significant challenges, which, if appropriately addressed, can pave the way for meeting the underlying intended objectives and play a pivotal role for ‘Ease of Doing Business’ in India. Typically, in case of large corporate taxpayers, before concluding the assessments, the Faceless Officer calls for copious amounts of data, justification etc. from the taxpayer such, as reconciliation of revenue with the GST returns, reconciliation of information reported on the Insight Portal, details of expenses in pre-defined formats etc. These information requests are often issued close to the statutory deadline for concluding such proceedings, leaving taxpayers with very limited time to provide the reconciliation and the necessary supporting documents, ultimately leading to unwarranted additions.
