Bombay High Court on Tuesday sought to know from the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) under which circular or provision it could downgrade a lookout circular issued against a woman being investigated in a 2019 fraud case. A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Manjusha Deshpande was hearing a petition filed by one Shikha Kapadia, who was seeking to quash an LOC issued against her in September 2019 after the SFIO launched a probe against her and her employer company. Advocate S K Halwasia, appearing for the SFIO, informed the court that the authority was downgrading the LOC issued against Kapadia. «We are downgrading the LOC to an extent where she (Kapadia) does not have to seek permission whenever she needs to travel. The immigration officers will inform the SFIO every time she travels,» Halwasia said.

NEW DELHI : Rural India emerged as the driving force behind the record-breaking sales of passenger vehicles in FY24, which crossed the 4-million-mark for the first time in a year, despite the demand for hatchbacks that have typically dominated car purchases in the countryside continuing to slide. In FY24, a total 4.23 million passenger vehicles were sold in India, rising 8.7% from 3.89 million units the previous year, which was also a record. One in every two of these vehicles sold last fiscal year was a sports utility vehicle, or an SUV, a segment that saw the sharpest growth of 28% in FY24, while sales of hatchbacks, or small, mini or compact cars, accounted for 28% of the industry’s total sales, declining 12% from the year before.

MUMBAI : In late evening circulars stock exchanges NSE and BSE directed their member-brokers to take note of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) notification of 5 January on hedging of foreign exchange risk, which restricts the use of exchange traded currency derivatives (ETCD) to hedging only from 5 April onwards. The circulars , according to some brokers, could spell the end of the 16-year-old ETCD as most of those who infuse liquidity into the market—proprietary and retail clients—act as counterparties to hedgers.

microfinance operations have remained highly concentrated, with top 10 states accounting for 85%of the total market, leaving a majority of districts and villages under-penetrated in terms of access to credit despite recent giant strides toward boosting financial inclusion. «It is a matter of concern as to why microfinance activity is not expanding in certain geographies. The exercise aims at finding the reasons behind the under-penetration so that the issues can be addressed,» Sa-Dhan executive director Jiji Mammen said. More granular data showed that about 475 districts out of 730 where microfinance has reached to the grassroot population in some form or the other have a penetration ratio less than 30%. In other words, less than 30 households out of 100 borrows micro loans from formal sources in the 65% of the districts with microfinance presence.

Google plans to destroy a trove of data that reflects millions of users’ web-browsing histories, part of a settlement of a lawsuit that alleged the company tracked millions of users without their knowledge. The class action, filed in 2020, accused Google of misleading users about how Chrome tracked the activity of anyone who used the private “Incognito" browsing option. The lawsuit alleged that Google’s marketing and privacy disclosures didn’t properly inform users of the kinds of data being collected, including details about which websites they viewed.
