Trudeau went public with Nijjar claims as it was going to come out in media: Indian-origin Sikh minister
Justin Trudeau went public with allegations implicating India in Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar's killing as he learned the story was going to come out in the media. Minister of Emergency Preparedness Harjit Singh Sajjan, who was previously the defence minister, told CBC Radio that Trudeau wanted to ensure Canadians had «accurate information' about the story before it made headlines». Speaking on evidence related to the allegations, the Liberal MP for Vancouver South said that it would be «very inappropriate» for him to discuss anything about that as a police investigation is underway. «When it comes to the evidence, it's the police that hold the evidence.

Will recent events take the charm off the great Canadian Dream?
Canada have escalated through this week over blames of a Khalistani activist's murder, worrying parents and families of Indian nationals in a far-off country as much as the country’s lawmakers brood over the flaring issue. Relations between the two countries worsened when on Thursday India suspended the issuance of visas in Canada, citing operational reasons. Canadian PM Justin Trudeau went on to call on the Indian government to cooperate with an official probe into the murder of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. However, though the situation is unlikely to alleviate overnight, immigration lawyers in Canada believe that there’s almost nothing to worry about in the long term. Some Indo-Canadians of Sikh background are already saying they don’t feel as safe in Canada as they once did, says Ravi Jain, Canada-based immigration lawyer and founder of Jain immigration, though Trudeau’s move did not surprise some in Canada’s Sikh community. “Some leaders of this community are already indicating that they are not surprised by the Prime Minister’s announcement.

As tensions rise, Canadian universities caution Indian students about delayed intakes, disrupted sessions
Canadian universities have raised concerns about potential visa delays for Indian students amid ongoing political tensions between the two nations. These delays could disrupt the upcoming spring academic session, scheduled to commence in January. In light of the uncertainty surrounding visa processing times, these representatives, currently attending an education fair in Hyderabad, have advised Indian students interested in pursuing higher education in Canada to consider planning their academic session for the fall/autumn term, starting in August 2024. Expressing their apprehension, one representative told TOI, «With just three months left for students to travel for the spring batch, there is apprehension that visa processing times may pose challenges.» Many universities are contemplating waiting for an additional week to assess the situation before making decisions regarding admission letters for either the spring or fall of 2024. They are actively counseling students not to rush their plans to travel to Canada, emphasizing potential delays in securing study permits. An Ontario university representative highlighted their intention to wait another week before finalizing admission plans. Depending on the evolving situation, they will determine whether to issue admission letters for January, May, or fall 2024. Their goal is to ensure that students do not need to defer admissions due to visa-related issues.

TRAI kicks off public consultation on national broadcasting policy
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a pre-consultation paper seeking inputs from stakeholders for the formulation of the National Broadcasting Policy (NBP), which has been in the works for the last four years. The pre-consultation paper has been issued following a letter from the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) dated July 13 requesting TRAI to give its inputs on the NBP. The ministry has been putting together a comprehensive policy for the broadcasting sector on the lines of national policies for other sectors like telecom. The TRAI's pre-consultation paper touches upon aspects like the need to have public service broadcasting and the policies required for TV, print, radio, and digital. Other key issues that are up for discussion include the promotion of local content, containing piracy, and having a separate regulator for the broadcasting sector, which includes segments like TV channels, cable TV, direct-to-home (DTH), and over-the-top (OTT), among others. The pre-consultation paper also discusses issues like having a robust grievance redressal mechanism to ensure compliance with the advertising and programme codes. The regulator has also sought input on issues like strengthening the audience measurement system. The stakeholders have been asked to provide their comments on ways of unlocking growth in the animation, visual effects, gaming, and comics (AVGC) sector. Stakeholders have to send comments by October 10. According to the recent FICCI-EY report, TV broadcasting sector revenues dipped 1.5% to Rs 70,900 crore in 2022.

Inside the global Khalistani alphabet soup: Outfits, leaders and operations
Canada — which is slowly turning into another Pakistan for India by giving a free space to Khalistanis. These organisations carry out propaganda, terror strikes and murders. Many of these are deeply linked to drug and human-trafficking cartels and various criminal gangs. Sitting in Canada, they can dictate crime in India through Indian operatives with total impunity, since the Canadian government does not act against them on the pretext of allowing «freedom of expression» Below are some of the Khalistani organisations active in Canada:Babar Khalsa International (BKI) Babar Khalsa International (BKI) is the most dreaded, most organised and the oldest Khalistani terror organisation. It survived the wiping out of the Khalistani terror in Punjab in the early nineties. The BKI styled itself after the Babbar Akali Movement of 1920 which was against the British colonial rule. It originated from the 1978 clashes between the militant Sikhs led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala and the Nirankaris, a sect considered heretical by radical Sikhs. Its founders were Sukhdev Singh Babbar and Talwinder Singh Parmar. In 1981, BKI spun off an oversear faction led by Parmar in Canada.
