'Disruptions pose many challenges but offer opportunities too'
Global disruptions may pose many challenges to how the world operates but they also offer considerable opportunities, the Prime Minister of Guyana Brigadier Mark Anthony Phillips said, giving the example of India's Vaccine Maitri that helped vulnerable countries at a time of need and propelled domestic manufacturing as well. Guyana, which has produced legendary cricketers like Clive Llyod and fast bowling debutant Shamar Joseph who propelled the West Indies to a stunning Test victory over Australia last month, has close diplomatic relations and a unique tie to India. The Prime Minister shared that 40% of Guyana's population comprises people of Indian origin. In his address at the summit, Phillips made a case for innovative and collaborative approach to meet common challenges being faced by nations across the world. «In the simplest of terms, global disruptions essentially change how the world operates. In today's world, disruptive forces such as technology, globalisation, and economic and demographic change, are constantly occurring,» the PM said.

View: Get a PPPiece of innovation action
Vikram lander's soft landing near the lunar south pole last year, India became a league of its own. And, yet, it ranks 40th on the Global Innovation Index. Isro-like successes remain isolated. R&D expenditures in India have stagnated at about 0.6% of GDP. While there is a need to increase public sector spending on R&D, it is often argued that private sector should step up its investments. Paradoxically, while MNCs are increasingly leveraging India as their innovation hub, the broader innovation ecosystem's output leaves much to be desired, and local enterprises lament limited availability of well-trained R&D professionals. There is limited clarity on the modalities of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation that came into effect on Monday, and the ₹1 lakh crore corpus for research and innovation announced in the interim budget. While these are welcome experiments in innovation financing, publicly supported industry consortia remain largely underutilised.

Digital pound consultation: User privacy and access to cash key concerns
Responding to a consultation exercise that kicked off in February, HM Treasury and the Bank of England emphasise that no final decision has been made to pursue a digital pound. Instead, work will continue during the design phase exploring its feasibility and potential design choices. The feedback from respondents from a range of industries and organisations was largely supportive of the proposed design set out in the 2023 Consultation Paper, while other respondents raised concerns about the implications of a digital pound for access to cash, users’ privacy, and control of their money. To address these concerns, HM Treasury confirms that if a digital pound were to be implemented, primary legislation would be introduced, and this would guarantee users’ privacy and control.
