Reality check: Pragmatic policy could outperform check-list reforms
We knocked on the doors of Hell’s darker chamber/ Pushed to the limit, we dragged ourselves in—Decades, Joy Division A decade is a good time-frame to take stock of just how much we pushed the limits, how far inside the darker chambers we dragged ourselves to, and finally, how much changed as an outcome. As the Narendra Modi government completes a decade, it’s not a bad idea to take stock of economic policymaking from a bit of Joy Division lens. A dispassionate analysis of the last decade throws up this point: the government has managed to check almost every major box on the “reforms wish-list’ of India since 1991.

"ASI report on Gyanvapi is no conclusive evidence," says All India Muslim Personal Law Board
All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has refuted claims that the report of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which conducted a scientific survey of the contentious Gyanvapi mosque premises in Varanasi and submitted the survey report in the district court earlier, found evidence of a Hindu temple there. In a press statement, AIMPLB executive member Qasim Rasool Ilyas said that the report of the ASI is not «conclusive evidence» in this controversial case. «By doing this the opposition party has created a feeling of anarchy and insecurity in the society,» he added. Ilyas also accused the Hindu side of 'insulting' the court by releasing the ASI report in the media. «Hindu communal organizations have been misleading the public for many years regarding the Gyanvapi Masjid. The latest example of this is a report of the Archaeological Survey of India which they filed in the court and made available to the plaintiff and defendant only on the orders of the court.

View: From Europe to the Pacific, world weighs mounting risk of war
NATO defence chiefs' meeting drew to a close, NATO Military Committee Chairman Admiral Robert Bauer outlined the steps he believed households within the alliance should already be taking in the event of war. «You need to have water, you need to have a radio on batteries and you need to have a flashlight on batteries to make sure that you can survive the first 36 hours,» he said, adding that in any major conflict member nations might need to introduce conscription to keep their militaries in the fight. The shifting «tectonic plates of power», he warned, were producing the most dangerous world in decades – and risks that could only be tackled by the private sector, industry and governments together to deliver greater resilience. «We need public and private actors to change their mindset from an era in which everything was plannable, foreseeable, controllable, focused on efficiency… to an era in which anything can happen at any time,» Bauer said. «An era in which we need to expect the unexpected.» Alongside what now appears to be an ongoing U.S.-UK military campaign in Yemen, the first weeks of 2024 have brought a much greater focus on the mounting risk of war in both Europe and the Pacific – as well as an awareness that the U.S.

Interest on dues from Vodafone Idea boosted Indus profits: Analysts
Indus Towers’ strong profits in the December quarter was boosted by an extra Rs 300 crore received from key customer, Vodafone Idea (Vi) as interest income on the latter’s old dues, said analysts. They added that this is reflected in a 94.5% sequential jump in Indus’ other income to nearly Rs 602 crore in the third quarter, FY24. The Rs 300 crore interest income is in addition to the Rs 300 crore directly collected from Vi by Indus towards part-clearance of past dues. “Indus’ higher net profit in Q3FY24, benefitted from higher other income, which had Rs 300 crore interest income from overdues,” ICICI Securities said in a note. Indus’s net profit grew 19% sequentially in the December quarter to Rs 1,541 crore. As per Citi Research, after the latest payments, Vi’s old dues to Indus is now at Rs 5,700 crore.
