TMZ first reported the news, stating that Grande filed her petition in Los Angeles County court on September 18, citing «irreconcilable differences.» Gomez also filed his own papers, noting the date of separation as February 20, 2023. In July, it was revealed that Grande and Gomez were ending their two-year marriage. Before their separation, they made efforts to reconcile, but those attempts were unsuccessful. Media outlets like TMZ, People, and Entertainment Tonight mentioned that despite the separation, Grande and Gomez maintained a friendly connection and communicated regularly by phone. The couple started dating in early 2020 but kept their relationship private until May when they publicly acknowledged it. They often appeared together on Grande's Instagram page, eventually announcing their engagement in December. Grande shared the engagement news on December 20 through a series of photos, including a glimpse of her engagement ring. They exchanged vows just five months later, in May 2021. Following their separation, rumors circulated about Grande dating her Wicked co-star Ethan Slater. Slater, known for his role as SpongeBob SquarePants in the musical, had previously been married to singer Lilly Jay, and they celebrated their four-year wedding anniversary in November 2022. The former couple also has a one-year-old son together.

Drew Barrymore had announced the return of her talk show for Season 4 beginning September 18, 2023. She had apologized to the Writers' Guild of America (WGA), the union behind the writers’ strike in the US, for doing so. She explained in a video on September 15 saying that she needs to keep her show running to pay the crew. But the actor deleted the video the same day, after backlash from her fans and the film industry. Considering her decision was harming the show and her image, Drew Barrymore seems to have reversed her call. Drew Barrymore released a statement on Instagram on September 17, 2023, saying, «I am making the decision to pause the show’s premiere until the strike is over.»
