Bangladesh tribunal tells investigators to finish probe against ousted premier Sheikh Hasina by next month
ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her close aides who face charges of crimes against humanity after hundreds of people were killed in a mass uprising this summer. Golam Mortuza Majumdar, the head judge of the three-member International Crimes Tribunal, set Dec 17 for investigators to finish their work, as the tribunal heard updates Monday from police about what the country's security agencies have done to arrest Hasina and her close aides. The decision came after prosecutors sought more time for the investigation. Hasina has been living in exile in India since Aug 5 when she fled the country amid the student-led protests. The Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal on Oct. 17 issued arrest warrants for Hasina and 45 others including former Cabinet ministers, advisors and military and civil officials. The country is now being run by an interim government headed by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus.

Sri Lanka beats New Zealand in 2nd ODI to win another home series
Kusal Mendis hit a patient 74 not out as Sri Lanka beat New Zealand by three wickets under the DLS method with six balls remaining in the rain-hit second ODI. Sri Lanka took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series with the final game also at Pallekele on Tuesday. Sri Lanka won the first one-day international by 45 runs — also by DLS — after rain disrupted that game at Dambulla. It was Sri Lanka's fifth ODI series win at home in 2024 after it had beaten Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, India and West Indies. Sri Lanka couldn't qualify for next year's Champions Trophy after finishing ninth at last year's 50-over World Cup in India, but has since then lost just one ODI series in Bangladesh while winning five at home. «It is really tough for batters to score runs here,» Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka said. «This is just another series. As a team, we are moving towards a big goal and we have to achieve that, this is a process.»

Trudeau says he could have acted faster on immigration changes, blames ‘bad actors’
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the federal government could have acted faster on reining in immigration programs, after blaming “bad actors” for gaming the system.Trudeau released a nearly seven-minute video on YouTube Sunday talking about the recent reduction in permanent residents being admitted to Canada and changes to the temporary foreign worker program.Over the next two years, the permanent residency stream is being reduced by about 20 per cent to 365,000 in 2027.In the video, Trudeau talks about the need to increase immigration after pandemic lockdowns ended in order to boost the labour market, saying the move helped avoid a full-blown recession. But after that, Trudeau says some “bad actors” took advantage of these programs, such as employers trying to avoid hiring Canadians, schools recruiting more international students for the higher tuition money, or scams promising bogus paths to citizenship.Trudeau says that he and his team could have acted quicker once it became apparent businesses didn’t need the added labour help anymore.Trudeau says the goal of the government’s immigration reduction is to help stabilize population growth while housing stocks catch up, and then to consider gradually increasing immigration rates once again.

65 million viewers: Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul bout gives a KO punch
Netflix Inc's foray into live sports streaming with the boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul drew a massive global audience that peaked at 65 million viewers but resulted in thousands of complaints from viewers about connection problems and frozen screens. «We crashed the site,» said Paul after claiming victory over the 58-yr-old Tyson. «This is the biggest event.» In an internal company memo seen by Bloomberg News, chief technology officer Elizabeth Stone said the bout drew a maximum of 65 million viewers at any one time, rivaling some of the most-watched sporting events. Some of those viewers took to social media to vent their frustration over glitches in streaming the highly-anticipated showdown. More than 100,000 users reported network issues on the Downdetector website throughout the livestreaming, commenting on slow buffering and network issues. Netflix declined to comment on the outcome of the event. -Bloomberg

Coldplay fans may just have some cold water thrown on their dreams to see the rock band perform live… due to a crisis of venues. A senior government official revealed that British rock band Coldplay initially chose Bengaluru as their preferred venue but shifted to Mumbai and Ahmedabad due to the city's lack of open arenas. «Major acts typically perform in large stadiums,» the official explained, highlighting how this limitation has also impacted other artists, such as A.R. Rahman, who canceled two Bengaluru shows for similar reasons. The official attributed the issue to the «short-sightedness of certain authorities, » to the Deccan Herald.
