Laid-off IITian working as a taxi driver in the US, wants to return to India but...Vir Das meets the cabbie
Vir Das, the award-winning comedian draws spotlight to an Indian taxi driver in the US, with a surprising background—an IIT Bombay graduate with a PhD and who worked as a scientist before being laid off. This highly qualified individual, now driving a cab in America, exemplifies the stark contrast between academic brilliance and the struggles of survival in a foreign land. Vir Das recounted meeting the driver at San Jose airport. Despite his evident discomfort behind the wheel, the driver maintained a polite demeanor, Vir Das said. The conversation soon drifted into Hindi, a language they both found comfort in, offering a brief respite from the alienation of living far from home. During this exchange, the driver shared his story—a tale of layoffs, survival, and the relentless pursuit of financial stability in the U.S. His current role as a cab driver was a far cry from the intellectual rigor of his scientific past, but it was a necessary step to make ends meet. The IIT graduate’s story is a sobering reminder of the unpredictability of life. Having excelled in one of the most prestigious educational institutions in India and pursued advanced research, he now navigated a very different path. His candid admission—missing home every single day—revealed a longing for a simpler life, one unburdened by mortgages, insurance payments, and the endless grind of the American dream. Yet, he stayed, tethered by responsibilities and a complex web of practicalities that often make returning home an impractical choice.

Kamala Harris pushes donors for more after raising US$1B+ in electoral defeat
Democratic Party’s prodigious fundraising operation raised more than $1 billion in her loss to Donald Trump, but the vice president is still pushing donors for more money after the election.Democrats are sending persistent appeals to Harris supporters without expressly asking them to cover any potential debts, enticing would-be donors instead with other matters: the Republican president-elect’s picks for his upcoming administration and a handful of pending congressional contests where ballots are still being tallied.“The Harris campaign certainly spent more than they raised and is now busy trying to fundraise,” said Adrian Hemond, a Democratic strategist from Michigan. He said he was been asked by the campaign after its loss to Trump to help with fundraising. The party is flooding Harris’ lucrative email donor list with near-daily appeals aimed at small-dollar donors — those whose contributions are measured in the hundreds of dollars or less.

Book review: Shomie Das's counterintuitive view on education
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Shomie Das, who was successively principal of three well-known boarding schools, Mayo College, Lawrence School, Sanawar, and The Doon School from 1969-95, had radically unconventional ideas about education, gleaned from German and Austrian educationists and the product of his own innate liberalism and innovativeness. His ideas about education have a relevance well beyond the three posh schools he headed because they were contrary to the priorities of Indian education, then and now.

Congress on Saturday dubbed Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav's tour of United Kingdom and Germany as «open drama in the name of investment» and jibed that he wanted to be an «international tourist» like Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Yadav will be visiting the two European nations from November 23 to December 1. In a statement, MP Congress chief Jitu Patwari said, «An open drama going on in the name of investment in Madhya Pradesh. Crores of rupees are being spent in the name of government publicity. When the CM and officials got bored of roaming in various states, they are now exploring the possibilities of government tourism abroad.»

Trump builds White House staff with Cheung as communications director and Gor as personnel director
Donald Trump announced Friday that Steven Cheung will serve as his White House communications director and Sergio Gor will run the personnel office. Both have been advisers to the president-elect since his 2016 campaign, Trump said. Both positions could be influential in the new administration, helping to develop its public messaging and internal workforce. Cheung led communications for Trump's latest campaign, where he gained a reputation for combative and insulting attacks on the Republican's opponents. A native of Sacramento, California, he worked in Republican politics and for the Ultimate Fighting Championship before joining Trump's team in 2016. Gor ran Winning Team Publishing, which he started with Donald Trump Jr. The company has published books by Trump and his allies. Gor also led the super PAC Right for America.

No brakes on tyre price hikes likely for now
natural rubber prices in the international markets are set to rise further as manufacturers have guided for further hikes in the ongoing quarter. According to them an increase of 2-6% taken since the beginning of FY25 is not commensurate with the increase on account of natural rubber prices. This, in turn, has jacked up raw material prices as percentage to net sales by 6-8%. Higher input costs coupled with a tepid demand from truck and carmakers dented profitability at all tyre makers in the second quarter over the year-ago period.

Samples obtained by Chinese spacecraft show moon's ancient volcanism
lunar volcanism. Researchers said on Friday the soil brought back from the Chang'e-6 landing site contained fragments of volcanic rock — basalt — dating to 4.2 billion years ago and to 2.8 billion years ago. This points to a long period of volcanic activity — at least 1.4 billion years — on the far side during the first half of the moon's history, when it was a more dynamic world than it is today. The moon, like Earth, formed about 4.5 billion years ago. Volcanism on the moon, Earth and other planetary bodies involves the eruption of molten rock from the mantle — the layer just under the outer crust — onto the surface. The landing site in the South Pole-Aitken Basin, an impact crater, is an area with the thinnest crust on the moon, helpful for finding evidence of volcanism.
