Dollar-starved Maldives notifies new foreign currency rules
Maldives has floated a new foreign currency regulation, limiting types of transactions allowed in foreign currency and imposing mandatory foreign currency exchange controls on tourism establishments and banks. Maldivian economy appears to have taken a hit after calls to Indian tourists to avoid the picturesque island nation as a response to President Mohamed Muizzu's 'India Out' campaign last year. Maldives last month averted a potential default on an Islamic bond payment after India extended a USD 50 million interest-free loan. With its forex reserves not matching its import bill, the island nation's central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) on October 1 introduced a new regulation, requiring all foreign currency income generated by the tourism industry to be deposited in local banks.

DIPAM asks its officers not to trade in shares of state-owned cos
public sector companies as they may be privy to market-sensitive information with regard to state-owned companies, an official said. In an internal order, the DIPAM said that any officer joining the department would be required to declare his/her holding in public sector enterprises and such shares could only be liquidated by the official concerned after approval from authorities. DIPAM, under the Ministry of Finance, manages government equity in public sector companies and is also responsible for undertaking minority stake sale, strategic disinvestment and privatisation. «DIPAM has issued an internal order saying that officers in the department will not buy or share shares of state-owned companies. The idea behind this is officials in DIPAM may be privy to some information which can be affecting the share prices of companies. It should not be so that they stand to benefit from that information,» the official told PTI.

Expect easing of pressure from high natural rubber price in H2: CEAT MD & CEO Arnab Banerjee
tyre major CEAT Ltd expects easing of pressure from high raw material costs in the second half of the ongoing fiscal after being impacted by 15-year high domestic natural rubber prices, according to its Managing Director and CEO Arnab Banerjee. The company expects its aftermarket business to continue to grow in double digits and better performance of its international business, which was also affected by non-availability of containers and high freight cost in the second quarter. The domestic natural rubber prices went up to a 15-year high at about Rs 250 per kg in the first half of the fiscal, Banerjee told PTI. «We hope to see an improvement in Q4. I think the pressure is going to ease off in the second half of the year,» he said when asked how long the impact of high natural rubber prices is expected to last.

More than 20% of Earth's plant species found only on islands and time is running out to save them
species diversity. It has long been speculated that islands support exceptionally high amounts of global biodiversity, but the true extent has not been known until now. In world-first research published in Nature Today, my colleagues and I counted and mapped the diversity of plant life on Earth's islands. We found 21 per cent of the world's total plant species are endemic to islands, meaning they occur nowhere else on the planet. These findings are important. Island plants are at higher risk of extinction than those on mainland. Detailed knowledge of plants species, and where they grow, is essential for monitoring and conserving them.
