Important for India to have stable leadership as world will witness stormy churn: EAM Jaishankar
world will witness a «very, very stormy» churn because of conflicts, power shifts and sharpening competition in this decade, which makes it all the more important for India to have a stable and mature leadership, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said. In an exclusive interview to PTI late Thursday, Jaishankar painted a picture of the world radically different from the one we are living in now by the end of 2020s when asked to draw on his nearly 50 years of experience in diplomacy and politics to give an assessment of the global power balance. «Multiple conflicts, tensions, divides! With all these variables that I am putting to you, I am painting to you, actually, a very, very stormy international scene for the balance of the decade,» said Jaishankar, a former ambassador to China and the United States, who was tapped for the political role by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019. Jaishankar especially referred to the declining influence of the United States, the conflict in Ukraine, the fighting in Gaza, attacks in the Red Sea, tensions in the South China Sea, the challenge of terrorism in different geographies and advent of new technologies as the drivers of the «churn».

Air Vanuatu files for bankruptcy protection after cancelling all international flights
Air Vanuatu filed for bankruptcy protection on Friday a day after the South Pacific state-owned carrier cancelled all international flights, stranding thousands of travellers. The airline on Wednesday cancelled more than 20 flights to and from the Australian cities of Sydney and Brisbane, and the New Zealand city of Auckland for the rest of the week. The airline said it was the result of «extended maintenance requirements» on their aircraft. Ernst & Young Australia's Morgan Kelly, Justin Walsh and Andrew Hanson were appointed liquidators in an equivalent of a US Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the firm said in a statement. The liquidators said safety and maintenance checks would be made before normal operations resumed.

Telangana Lok Sabha polls: BJP aims to capitalise on Modi-factor, BRS defections to counter Congress guarantees
BJP in Telangana is aggressively pushing to improve on its previous tally of four out of 17 seats in the May 13 Lok Sabha polls in the face of the ruling Congress party’s guarantees that are less than one year old. A larger tally would help the saffron party establish a firm foothold in another southern state, aside from Karnataka and aim for a win in the assembly in coming years. Sections of political analysts believe pro-BJP sentiment is one the rise in state, especially in urban areas, amidst heavy campaigning by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah, party president J.P. Nadda, Union minister Smriti Irani, and other national leaders. A slew of defections from the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) may also help the saffron party’s chances, they said. However, the BJP giving five of the 17 available NDA tickets to recent imports in the place of older core members may leave the party with internal fissures. In the assembly polls last year, the party had fielded 118 candidates, 54 of which were defectors. Only one of them managed to win. “We have been working for the party and have managed to build a base ever since the state was formed. But the leadership has chosen to field people from other parties over our own leaders, which is disappointing,” a party member said.

The liberal international order is slowly coming apart
As we report, the disintegration of the old order is visible everywhere. Sanctions are used four times as much as they were during the 1990s; America has recently imposed “secondary" penalties on entities that support Russia’s armies. A subsidy war is under way, as countries seek to copy China’s and America’s vast state backing for green manufacturing.

VCs chasing Indian studios working on complex games
Indian studios working on complex games that require heavy investments — so far the sole domain of international publishers like Krafton and Garena — are seeing increased interest from investors, helped in part by fast-maturing consumer and talent cohorts. These studios are working on midcore and hardcore games, which generally have higher complexity compared to casual games like Ludo and require a higher level of involvement and time commitment from the player. In India, the most popular games in this genre — like Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), FreeFire, Call of Duty and Fortnite — are all from international publishers such as Krafton, Garena, Riot Games and Epic Games. Such games are often rated AA or AAA, which signifies their high development and marketing values.
