Indian studios working on complex games that require heavy investments — so far the sole domain of international publishers like Krafton and Garena — are seeing increased interest from investors, helped in part by fast-maturing consumer and talent cohorts.
These studios are working on midcore and hardcore games, which generally have higher complexity compared to casual games like Ludo and require a higher level of involvement and time commitment from the player. In India, the most popular games in this genre — like Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), FreeFire, Call of Duty and Fortnite — are all from international publishers such as Krafton, Garena, Riot Games and Epic Games. Such games are often rated AA or AAA, which signifies their high development and marketing values.
An increasing number of Indian studios like Mayhem Studios and LightFury Games are working to build such games themselves, while some like Liquidnitro Games are looking to provide related services to major game publishers. Since November 2022, twenty-seven gaming and gaming-adjacent firms have seen investments of over $83 million, according to data from Tracxn.
