Public Accounts Committee to look into allegations against Sebi Chief Madhabi Puri Buch
Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is set to look into allegations against Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) chief Madhabi Puri Buch and may summon her later this month, said people with knowledge of the matter. The matter was added to the PAC's agenda after several members demanded an inquiry into the functioning of Sebi and allegations against Buch at the panel's first meeting on August 29. The PAC is headed by Congress leader KC Venugopal and has members from both the ruling NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc. The agenda item doesn't specify the regulator or name the chief. It's listed as «Performance review of regulatory bodies established by act of parliament.» However, officials said it stemmed from the recent allegations against the Sebi chief. «The matter was added on suo moto basis in the August 29 meeting as many members were concerned about the serious allegations against the capital market regulator and the Sebi chief,» said one of the persons. «The concerned ministry officials may be summoned this month.»

Was Hvaldimir the “spy whale" shot dead? Animal rights groups demand investigation
Animal rights groups claimed that "Hvaldimir," a beluga whale well-known for its alleged connections to the Russian military, had been shot to death. The whale made headlines across the world in 2019 when it was spotted off the coast of Norway. It was wearing a harness made of metal, which led to speculation that Russia had been training it to be a spy. Animal rights organizations NOAH and One Whale claimed that gunshot was the cause of the whale's demise and pushed Norwegian police to launch a criminal inquiry into the event, as per the reports of The Moscow Times. Hvaldimir's body was discovered on Saturday in a bay on the southwest coast of Norway. Following that, his remains were transferred to the Norwegian Veterinary Institute for an autopsy; the results are expected to be available in three weeks. After seeing the whale's corpse, Regina Crosby Haug, the leader of One Whale, verified that it had sustained many gunshot wounds. Hvaldimir's bloodied body was depicted in photos that One Whale and NOAH published, and they clearly indicated bullet holes. The director of NOAH, Siri Martinsen, stressed the gravity of the injuries and voiced concern about the possibility of criminal conduct. At present, the police are assessing the amount of evidence to see if a formal inquiry should be launched.

RG Kar doctor rape and murder: TMC criticises CBI, shows solidarity with victim's parents
Trinamool ministers trained their guns against CBI but showed solidarity to the parents. During “Reclaim the Night” and candle-light march, the deceased doctor's parents participated and claimed that there was an attempt to bribe them by IPS DC-North, when the body of the deceased PGT medical student was still lying at home. “We had kept the body on the first floor where we live. DC-North took me inside my residence. We felt miserable. I told him my daughter had worked harder to become a doctor compared to his efforts to become an IPS. After my daughter’s death, when we waited outside they did not allow us to see the body,” the deceased girl’s father claimed.

The Telegram chief’s arrest shouldn’t lead us down a faulty policy path
A lot has happened since Pavel Durov, the billionaire Russian-born Emirati businessman who founded the popular social media and messaging app Telegram, was arrested in France last week. Durov, who has four passports, including one from France, received support from voices across the ideological spectrum, from the far right to the progressive left. Russian media predictably labelled the arrest a Western conspiracy.

Potential outbreak-causing dangerous viruses found in China’s fur animals
coronaviruses and influenza, are harbored in raccoon dogs, mink and other animals farmed for fur in China, scientists found in the first in-depth investigation of the seldom-studied critters. Researchers scoured for viruses in the lungs, intestines and other tissues of 461 individual fur animals that were found dead due to disease across China. They identified 125 virus species, including 36 that were novel and 39 at potentially-high risk of crossing the species barrier, including spilling over to infect humans. Raccoon dogs and mink, valued for their soft pelts, carried the highest number of potentially dangerous viruses, according to the research, published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

Sheikh Hasina should be quiet till Bangladesh seeks extradition: Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus
Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus in an interview with PTI on Thursday attacked former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is seeking asylum in India. Younus, who is a Nobel laurate, said that the former prime minister had to keep quiet if India was to «keep her until Bangladesh wants her back». This comes after Hasina made political statements, which Yunus termed «unfriendly». «No one is comfortable with her stance there in India because we want her back to try her. She is there in India and at times she is talking, which is problematic. Had she been quiet, we would have forgotten it; people would have also forgotten it as she would have been in her own world. But sitting in India, she is speaking and giving instructions. No one likes it,» he said.

Matthew Lau: Liberals' productivity 'working group' shows why Canada isn't producing
Canada’s dismal economic productivity is a crisis, and the Trudeau government’s “solution” of creating a new federal working group to investigate its cause, announced recently by Treasury Board President Anita Anand, is a joke. That is the view, not just of Conservative MPs and libertarian columnists, but also of an iPolitics article Anand herself posted on social media to share the news she was creating this working group.

A 14-year-old student fatally shot 4 people in a rampage at a Georgia high school, officials say
Georgia high school and killed four people on Wednesday, authorities said, sending students scrambling for shelter in their classrooms — and eventually to the football stadium — as officers swarmed the campus and parents raced to find out if their children were safe. The dead were identified as two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in Winder, about an hour's drive from Atlanta. At least nine other people — eight students and one teacher — were taken to hospitals with injuries. The words «hard lockdown» appeared on a screen in junior Layla Ferrell's health class and lights began flashing. She and her frightened classmates piled desks and chairs in front of the door to create a barricade, she recalled.
