Power to arrest must be directly proportional to its checks and balances: Delhi court to ED
bail to an accused in a money laundering case and said that the power to arrest must be directly proportional to its checks and balances coupled with unambiguous regulations. Granting bail to Mangelal Sunil Agarwal, Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Dheeraj Mor noted that in a «very unpleasant situation», while the previous investigating officer had cited him as a witness, the next IO chose to arrest him based on the same evidence available on record. «The hallmark of investigation is its objectivity. Subjective interpretation of IO must be deprecated as it would make a supposed objective investigation dependent upon his uncontrolled whims and fancies, who has been conferred extreme power of arrest that leads to curtailing liberty of an individual,» the judge said in the order passed on August 31. «In these circumstances, it is apparent that one of the lOs was/is wrong and either acted upon the considerations extraneous to law for the reasons to be ascertained or he was incompetent to comprehend the facts of the case in proper perspective.

No idea about Hema committee; related demands: Rajinikanth
Rajinikanth on Sunday said he was not aware of the Justice K Hema Committee and demands to set up a similar panel in Tamil Nadu. When reporters asked him about the panel of the neighbouring state and several people demanding setting up in Tamil Nadu a panel like the Kerala's Justice Hema Committee, he told reporters: «What? I am not aware of it, sorry.» The Justice Hema committee was constituted by the Kerala government after the 2017 actress assault case. Last month, a redacted version of the Justice Hema Committee report on harassment faced by women in the Malayalam cinema industry was made public. It contains shocking accounts alleging harassment, exploitation, and ill-treatment of women professionals. The 235-page report, published after redacting the names of witnesses and the accused, notes that the Malayalam film industry is controlled by about 10 to 15 male producers, directors, and actors who dominate and exert control over the industry.

Iran probe finds Raisi helicopter crash caused by weather
Iran's final investigation into the May helicopter crash that killed president Ebrahim Raisi has found it was caused by bad weather, the body investigating the case said Sunday. The helicopter carrying 63-year-old Raisi and his entourage came down on a fog-shrouded mountainside in northern Iran, killing the president and seven others, and triggering snap elections. The main cause of the helicopter crash was the «complex climatic and atmospheric conditions of the region in the spring», the special board investigating the dimensions and causes of the helicopter accident said, according to state broadcaster IRIB.

Breaking his silence on the report and the subsequent allegations that rocked the cinema world, Mammootty said that he wholeheartedly welcomes and supports the recommendations and solutions in the committee's report and urged all associations in the film industry to join hands in implementing them. He said that the police was vigorously investigating the complaints of sexual harassment and abuse raised by several women, so let the agency carry on with its probe honestly.

Bihar faces crisis with over a dozen bridge collapses affecting daily travel
Bihar, is clinging to a single, wobbly pillar. “Even if we walk on it, the bridge shakes,” says Pratima Devi, Bharti’s wife, calling it a bridge to hell. “Hamara bank, bazaar sab udhar na hai, kiya kore (Our bank, market are all on that side, what can we do)?” she asks. Then, a buffalo herder comes with his animals. He warily releases them in ones and twos across the bridge, wondering if it might collapse under their hoofs. About 320 km southeast of Siwan, Ajay Yadav recalls witnessing a huge bridge collapsing not once, but thrice, in Sultanganj. Pointing towards the bridge that is under construction, he says, “I don’t know if this bridge will ever be completed, but even if it does, I’ll wait for months before I dare to use it.”
