Rejig of riches: Study moots robin hood tax for equality
Thomas Piketty suggests India should impose a wealth tax on the ultra-rich to tackle inequality and create fiscal space for investments in the social sector. The paper, released on Friday, suggests imposing a 2% annual tax on net wealth over ₹10 crore, and a 33% inheritance tax on estates exceeding ₹10 crore in valuation. This could generate revenue amounting to 2.73% of gross domestic product (GDP), it said. According to the paper, Towards Tax Justice & Wealth Redistribution in India: Proposals, based on the latest inequality estimates, 0.04% of the adult population holds more than a quarter of total wealth, and imposing this tax would leave 99.96% unaffected. «Progressive wealth taxation, effective redistribution, and broad-based social sector investments are urgently needed to build an equitable and prosperous India,» said Anmol Somanchi, one of the four authors of the report.

OBC order BJP conspiracy to divide Muslims & SCs: Mamata Banerjee
Mamata Banerjee alleged at a public rally on Friday that the Calcutta High Court's order on the cancellation of OBC certificates was the result of a "conspiracy" by the BJP to create division between Muslims and Tapshilis (scheduled castes). «I will give justice to people. There are Tapshilis, Adivasis and Muslims. I will not deprive anyone of their rights,» Banerjee said, speaking in a public rally at Joynagar in the South 24 Parganas district. Cancellation of the certificates would affect many Hindus as well as minorities other than Muslims too, she said, affirming that her government would move the Supreme Court against the order of the high court, which cancelled around half a million OBC certificates issued after 2010, citing violation of reservation rules.

PM Modi 'betrayed' youth by 'forcibly' imposing Agnipath scheme: Rahul Gandhi
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had "betrayed" the youth dreaming of serving the country by «forcibly» imposing the Agnipath scheme and asserted that an INDIA bloc government will ensure justice for them. Gandhi shared a video of his recent interaction on a tempo with some youth, who wanted to join the armed forces but could not do so because of the Agnipath scheme being introduced. In a post on X in Hindi along with the video, the former Congress chief said that while travelling on a 'Deshbhakti Ka Tempo', he got to know closely about the sufferings of the youth. «Narendra Modi has betrayed the youth who dream of serving the country in the army and has forcibly imposed the Agnipath scheme on them,» he said.

Merely being not named in predicate offence doesn't mean one can't be prosecuted under PMLA: Supreme Court
predicate offence does not mean that he cannot be prosecuted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the Supreme Court said on Friday while hearing a plea in a money-laundering case arising out of the alleged coal-block allocation scam. The observation came from a vacation bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal, which was hearing a petition filed by one Sudhir Gupta seeking quashing of an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) against him and the subsequent proceedings arising out of it. The bench told advocate Vijay Aggarwal, who appeared in the court on behalf of Gupta, that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) ECIR could neither be quashed nor stayed. Aggarwal told the bench that the petitioner was arrayed as a witness in a related case lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), but the ED has made him an accused in the money-laundering case.

Excise scam: ED opposes Kavitha's bail plea, says release to affect probe to unearth conspiracy
Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday opposed in the Delhi High Court the bail plea of BRS leader K Kavitha in a money laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam, saying her release would adversely affect further investigation to unearth the «deep-rooted, multi-layered conspiracy». The ED, in its reply to Kavitha's bail plea, contended that the Telangana lawmaker is a «highly influential» individual and stands accused of having committed a grave economic offence. She has the potential to tamper with evidence and influence witnesses, it said. «K Kavitha has conspired with other people and actively involved in payment of kickbacks to the tune of Rs 100 crore and then in establishing the money laundering ecosystem, that is, M/s Indo Spirits through her proxy which generated proceeds of crime of Rs 192.8 crore. By such acts, K Kavitha is involved in various processes and activities relating to proceeds of crime (POC) to the tune of Rs 292.8 crore,» the probe agency said in its counter affidavit. On Friday, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma heard part arguments advanced by Kavitha's counsel and listed the matter for further proceedings on May 27.

In battle for Haryana's Ambala, BJP banks on pro-women schemes; Congress leans on its 'pillars of justice'
Ambala Lok Sabha constituency of Haryana, which goes to polls in the penultimate phase on May 25, is set to see a fierce bipolar contest between the ruling BJP and the Congress. Publishing polling booth-wise data will "vitiate" electoral space, create 'chaos': EC
Election Commission has opposed in the Supreme Court an NGO's demand to upload polling station-wise voter turnout data on its website within 48 hours of the conclusion of polling for each phase of the Lok Sabha elections, contending it will «vitiate» the electoral space and cause «chaos» in the poll machinery in the midst of the general elections. A vacation bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma is scheduled to hear the plea of NGO 'Association for Democratic Reforms', which has also sought direction to the poll panel that scanned legible copies of Form 17C Part-I (Account of Votes Recorded) of all polling stations be uploaded immediately after the polls. In its counter affidavit, the poll panel said there is no legal mandate to provide Form 17C to any person other than the candidate or his agent.
