Will demerger into 6 separate listed entities help Vedanta garner investor interest?
Deven Choksey, MD, DRChoksey FinServ Pvt. Ltd. says the verticals which are getting demerged now would provide opportunity to the lenders to take control of such verticals immediately, as a result of which, further unlocking of values can happen including sale of some of the verticals, which would probably satisfy the creditors or the lenders who have given money to them What is your first take on Vedanta because the stock has been reeling under pressure very near to its 52-week low on the concerns of the debt level? Do you believe the restructuring and demerger into six different separate listed entities will help Vedanta garner investor interest of investors, how are you looking at it? Let us look at it from different perspectives; the first perspective is from the creditors who have lent to this group. At the current level, they probably want to see the securitization of assets, currently in the existing structure because all the assets are merged into one and because the resultant structure which is a pyramid structure, is getting created. It becomes impossible for the creditors to take a view on the subject and as a result, more comfortable when the individual vertical is demerged.

Why a US recession is still likely — and coming soon
A summer in which inflation trended lower, jobs remained plentiful and consumers kept spending has bolstered confidence — not least at the Federal Reserve — that the world’s biggest economy will avoid recession. A last-minute deal to avoid a government shutdown kicks one immediate risk a little further into the future. But a major auto strike, the resumption of student-loan repayments, and a shutdown that may yet come back after the stop-gap spending deal lapses, could easily shave a percentage point off GDP growth in the fourth quarter. Add those shocks to other powerful forces at work on the economy — from dwindling pandemic savings to soaring interest rates and now oil prices too — and the combined impact could be enough to tip the US into a downturn as early as this year. Here are six reasons why a recession remains Bloomberg Economics’ base case.

What to Expect from RBI’s policy meet this week
The last interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in the current rate hike cycle, happened on 8 February. The next meeting is round the corner, on 6 October. It is likely that RBI would pause at the current level for some time. There is also a faint expectation that RBI may hike the rate one last time, taking the repo rate from 6.5% to 6.75%. Here are two factors that will influence the decision by RBI.

FPIs turn net sellers after 6 months of investment; withdraw Rs 14,767 cr in Sept
net sellers and pulled out of over Rs 14,767 crore from Indian equities in September, primarily due to dollar appreciation, steady rise in the US bond yields, and a spike in crude oil prices. Going forward, the outlook for FPI flows in India is uncertain, as it will depend on the performance of the Indian economy, the RBI's October monetary policy, and the outcome of the September quarter earnings, Mayank Mehra, smallcase, manager and principal partner at Craving Alpha, said. According to data with the depositories, Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) have sold shares to the tune of Rs 14,767 crore in September.

China seeks to make travel, payments easier for foreigners
China plans to make it easier for foreign tourists to book tickets, register at hotels and use their overseas bank cards in an effort to boost stubbornly low visitation figures. The State Council released the list of measures, though stopped short of outlining specific strategies to hit its targets, in a statement on Friday that underscored tourism’s important role in spurring economic growth. The release coincides with the first day of of the eight-day National Day and Golden Week holiday period, which is typically a boon for travel and consumption. China’s three-year pursuit of Covid Zero essentially sealed the country off from the world and, despite its reopening earlier this year, few foreign tourists are visiting. A top concern for many is safety, but visa hassles, lack of flights and idiosyncratic payment systems also make the idea of a holiday in China daunting for many potential visitors. Payments and the use of digital platforms that are unique to the country represent a practical hurdle for many tourists. It’s often difficult to use cash, though China’s central bank has repeatedly said that rejecting it is illegal. And most vendors — from street stalls to large department stores — only accept local payment systems such as WeChat Pay and Alipay.

A look into India's tur problem: Why is this dal always on the boil?
India imports most of its tur dal, also called arhar, from two African nations, Mozambique and Malawi, and Myanmar, and is the third largest importer of tur dal in the world, only behind the United States and Canada. Also Read: Pulses supplies to remain constrained till Diwali What has happened? Over the past month, the average market price of tur dal has risen by Rs 10 per kilogram, reaching Rs 149 per kilogram. The prices of tur are being bolstered by several factors, including the constrained availability of domestic stocks, delays in the sowing of the kharif crop, and a sluggish pace of imports. Tur dal in India is boiling at record-high prices and to prevent hoarding and elicit its continuous release, the Central government on September 25 significantly reduced the stock limit for tur, and also urad dal, held by wholesalers and large retail chains from 200 tonnes to 50 tonnes.

Gold prices fall to six-month low. What’s bothering traders?
Gold on the key London spot market declined to a six-month low on firm US dollar and a jump in Treasury yields. Hopes of interest rates staying higher for an unexpected period increased the demand for US assets. Despite a weaker Indian Rupee, domestic gold mirrored the trend with the most active MCX futures and shed its price to Rs 57500 per ten grams, its lowest level since March 2023.
