Retail investors in derivatives at record in August
MUMBAI : The markets regulator’s attempts to warn retail investors about the risks of trading in derivatives appear to have fallen on deaf ears. The number of retail participants trading in derivatives on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India Ltd, the country’s largest stock exchange, hit a record in August. Market participants said the surge was fuelled by the growing popularity of relatively cheaper zero-day options, which expire daily.

The planet can’t afford another China: NITI Aayog’s Suman Bery
NEW DELHI : India must follow mindful and environmentally conscious consumption and production rather than the single-minded pursuit of growth at any cost, federal policy think tank NITI Aayog vice chairman Suman K. Bery said in an interview. Bery proposed that emerging economic realities, including the potential of services exports, India’s prospects of becoming an agriculture superpower, and the dwindling potential of the manufacturing sector to create jobs due to increased productivity, warrant a review of the traditional notions on which development models are built.

Bond Vigilantes Return Amid Persistent Inflation: Should Investors Be Worried?
The term “Bond Vigilantes” is a nostalgic twist on an old-west theme. In the nineteenth century, the American West formed self-appointed groups, or committees, to seize the duties of law enforcement and judicial authority in situations when citizens found law enforcement lacking or inadequate.

Anti-GPS jamming, identification devices developed by IIT Jammu nearing completion: Officials
anti-GPS jamming and Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) devices, are part of the design and development being undertaken by IIT Jammu and CST Advanced Systems Private Limited in a joint collaboration. «We have a collaboration with IIT Jammu in which we are working on six to seven projects. Two of these projects are reaching completion,» CST Advanced Systems General Manager Colonel (Retd) Anil J Alex told PTI on Friday. He said one of the two projects reaching completion is an anti-GPS jamming device, which will «save our drones, vehicles and other GPS enabled devices from the enemy» jamming them. The anti-GPS jamming device is a small-sized, light weight, low powered device suitable to be retrofitted to protect any navigation system, officials said. Colonel (Retd) Alex said the second project nearing completion is the IFF device, which will help the Army in detecting its own forces in the battlefield during counter-insurgency or counter-terrorism operations. «It works on RF (Radio Frequency) mesh.

Antarctica's sea-ice well below winter level, at 'mind-blowing' low: Experts
Climate change and global warming have played a devastating role in maintaining the ecological balance of the planet earth. As per satellite data a new worrying benchmark for Antarctica shows that the sea-ice surrounding the region is well below any previous recorded winter level, reported BBC. "It's so far outside anything we've seen, it's almost mind-blowing," BBC quoted Walter Meier, who monitors sea-ice with the National Snow and Ice Data Center, as saying.

Clean aviation will take more than just biofuels
agricultural produce. Ethanol yielding crops like sugarcane and corn are used for it and their acreage has been increasing across the world. Yet, as it involves a diversion of farm resources away from primary purposes like nutrition, output constraints will kick in sooner than we’d like.

Project Cheetah in India completes one year with highs and lows
India's ambitious project Cheetah on Sunday completed one year after the first batch of eight Namibian cheetahs was released in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park (KNP) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday on September 17, 2022. Subsequently, twelve cheetahs from South Africa were also translocated and released in Kuno National Park in February 2023. These cheetahs represent a big feather in India's cap for restoring natural treasures. The entire project was implemented under the meticulous supervision of the expert team consisting of Government officials, Scientists, Wildlife Biologists and Veterinarians belonging to Namibia, South Africa and India, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change stated. Out of the above 6 criteria given in the action plan for assessing the short-term success, the project has already met four criteria namely: 50 per cent survival of introduced cheetahs, the establishment of home ranges, the birth of cubs in Kuno and the project has contributed revenue to the local communities directly through the engagement of cheetah trackers and indirectly by way of appreciation of land value in the surrounding areas of Kuno, it stated. The Ministry further stated «The challenging inter-continental, wild to wild, Cheetah translocation by air, from Namibia and South Africa to India is the first ever such effort undertaken in the world to rectify the ecologically wrong done in the past.

The world is struggling to make enough diesel
oil refiners are proving powerless to make enough diesel, opening a new inflationary front and depriving economies of a fuel that powers industry and transport alike. While oil futures are rocketing — on Friday they were just below $95 a barrel in London — the rally pales in comparison with the surge in diesel. US prices jumped above $140 to the highest ever for this time of year on Thursday. Europe’s equivalent soared 60% since summer. And it could get worse. Saudi Arabia and Russia have turned down the taps on production of crudes that are richer in diesel. On Sept. 5, both nations — leaders in the OPEC+ alliance — announced they would prolong those curbs through year-end, a period in which demand for the fuel usually picks up. “We’re at risk of seeing continued tightness in the market, especially for distillates, coming into the winter months,” said Toril Bosoni, head of the oil market division at the International Energy Agency, referring to the category of fuel that includes diesel. “Refineries are struggling to keep up.” The situation is challenging for a global refining fleet that’s been dogged by lackluster production for months. Searing Northern-Hemisphere heat this summer forced many plants to run at a slower pace than normal, leaving stockpiles stunted. There’s also been pressure on them to make other products instead like jet fuel and gasoline, where demand has rebounded hard, according to Callum Bruce, an analyst at Goldman Sachs Group Inc.

"Low-level politics": AAP after Delhi CM not invited for inauguration of Airport Express Line
Narendra Modi for not sending an invitation to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for the inauguration of the Delhi Airport Metro Express line. Ahead of the inauguration, Kakkar took to X, and accused PM Modi of «low-level politics». Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the extension of the Delhi Airport Metro Express line from Dwarka Sector 21 to a new metro station 'YashoBhoomi Dwarka Sector 25'. «Today the Prime Minister will inaugurate the „Airport Express Line“ in Delhi. Delhi Government bears 50 per cent of the expenses of Delhi Metro but Modi ji does small politics of „I, Me and Myself“, that is why he did not consider it necessary to send an invitation to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal». Taking a dig at PM Modi, the AAP leader said, «Your low-level politics is not liked by people of Delhi». «Delhi belongs to its people, Prime Minister, that is why you could never win because your heart is small and low level politics is not liked by the people of Delhi,» she added. After the inauguration, the Prime Minister took a ride on the Delhi Metro.

Mysterious Marrakech sky: Exploring the riddle of 'Earthquake Lights' & their unexplained appearance
Marrakech, Morocco, shared videos recorded before the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that hit the area Friday, showing unidentified lights in the sky. The bizarre aerial phenomena are known as earthquake lights and seem to occur above sites of seismic stress. «People have wondered about them forever,» said Karen Daniels, a physicist at North Carolina State University. «It's one of those persistent mysteries that hang around and never quite get nailed.» Earthquake lights are difficult to study because earthquakes are impossible to predict. Without knowing when or where they will occur, researchers don't know where to place sensitive equipment that can detect them. Some experts doubt they're associated with earthquakes at all, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. But accounts of these lights go back centuries, said John Ebel, a seismologist at Boston College who wrote a book on the history of earthquakes in the northeastern United States. In a study in 2014, researchers found reports of aerial luminous phenomena from 65 earthquakes occurring in Europe and the Americas during the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. People have reported a variety of kinds of earthquake lights, ranging from glows high in the sky to low on the horizon. Some last up to minutes; others flash on and off like lightning. They've also been seen in different colors.
