All the world's a stage and we got to play unexpected parts in 2023
₹2,000 notes rang bells of demonetization some 7 years ago, as people rushed to change or deposit the same. Was it a measure to remove black money just before election time? Or was it a routine part of a ‘clean notes’ policy? Almost all the notes came back into the system and one could say all’s well that ends well. A nagging question is that if the policy of clean notes is pursued, will the ₹500 note see similar action next year? Shakespeare would say, ‘Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice.’ Ninth, just as news broke that India had lost the World Cup cricket final, a social media post went around claiming that India’s GDP had crossed the $4 trillion mark.

Burning Man's muddy triumph: Can this experiment endure another 30 years?
Nevada's northern desert became the new canvas for Burning Man, relocating from San Francisco's Baker Beach. This event, once an intimate gathering, burgeoned into a surrealistic carnival over three decades. However, its exponential growth led to concerns about deviating from its core values of inclusivity, expression, and leaving no trace. In 2011, ticket shortages triggered a lottery system, challenging the event's radical inclusiveness. As Burning Man evolved, so did the influx of opulent accommodations, billionaires, and celebrities, sparking debates about its future. Despite facing criticism and questions, the event continued to attract a massive crowd, becoming a transient city rivaling Vegas and Reno.

European shares edge higher at start of holiday-thinned week
European shares were marginally higher on Wednesday as robust China data lifted miners, while an overnight Wall Street rally amid persisting optimism the Federal Reserve could begin cutting rates as early as next March helped tech stocks rise. By 0814 GMT, the pan European STOXX 600 rose 0.1% at 477.83 points following an over 0.4% gain across major Wall Street indexes overnight. Basic resources was amongst the top gainers, rising 0.4% as most base metal and iron ore prices advanced after data showed manufacturing activity in top consumer China improved last month, while energy advanced 0.6%. The technology sector, which houses Europe's major chipmakers, jumped 0.7%, in line with their rising Wall Street counterparts. Keeping a lid on gains, telecoms and insurers fell 0.4% each. Volumes are expected to be light as traders return from an extended Christmas break with only a few trading days left in 2023. Bayer rose 1.7% after the German drugs-to-pesticides group said it has won a trial in a lawsuit brought by a California man who said he developed cancer from exposure to its Roundup weedkiller.

The Economic Possibilities For Our Grandchildren in 1930, a brief optimistic tract about the distant future at a time when the world was facing immense economic difficulties. His vision of a world of abundance and leisure, when cultivation of the art of life will be more important than an endless pursuit of the means of life, was at odds with the huge misery and unemployment that was spreading across most of the world.

2023's Top 10 cinematic triumphs: Unveiling a year of unparalleled movie magic
Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," were huge hits, surprising everyone by breaking box office records and getting ready for the Oscars. Greta Gerwig's «Barbie» delivered a surprising feminist take, as Margot Robbie's introspective Barbie teamed up with Ryan Gosling's clueless Ken, weaving a narrative far beyond mere doll play. On the other hand, Christopher Nolan's «Oppenheimer» painted a compelling portrait of J. Robert Oppenheimer, embodied flawlessly by Cillian Murphy, delving into the conflicted mind of the architect behind the atomic age, marking it as a visionary masterpiece.

In India, financial entities find themselves contending with an emerging and chilling risk – the proliferation of deepfakes.
