Apple India business value exceeds ₹2 lakh Cr. How did it reach there?
Apple Inc's business in India, including exports, crossed ₹2 lakh crore in fiscal 2024, driven not only by a surge in the local manufacturing and export of iPhones, but also a spurt in domestic sales of its other products including MacBooks, iPads and Watches. The US-based tech giant has likely exhibited the fastest growth in production and exports by any company in the last 50 years in India, making it the largest global value chain operating here, said officials. The company exported ₹1.35 lakh crore worth of iPhones, highest by any single brand in FY24 from India, while local sales were ₹68,000 crore. The Economic Survey 2023-24 mentioned Apple five times, underscoring the company's role in India's efforts to become a global smartphone manufacturing hub.

ISRO's SSLV, private players Skyroot, Agnikul eye share in small satellite business
ISRO's latest satellite launch vehicle ' SSLV' is the first rocket in its category to be ready for commercialisation with two others, 'Vikram' from Skyroot and 'Agnibaan' from Agnikul Cosmos, expected to vie for market share to place small satellites in orbit. According to industry estimates, the satellite launch market in India is expected to grow from USD 720 million in 2022 to USD 3.5 billion by 2033 and small satellites are likely to be the most preferred modes for a number of applications ranging from providing internet connectivity to earth observation. Space start-ups such as Pixxel and Satsure have already announced plans to have constellations of small satellites for the range of services they plan to offer and Indian launch vehicles will vie to be the preferred rockets to place these satellites in orbit. «Larger launch vehicles are there, but with a large number of satellites being launched, companies do not want to wait, they want to launch a satellite as soon as they can and small vehicles are tailor made for them,» Lt Gen A K Bhatt (retd), Director General of Indian Space Association, told PTI.

Foxconn looks to tech on more than making smartphones
Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn is looking to move up the value chain to go beyond smartphones and make products for sectors like information and communication technology (ICT), electric vehicles (EV), batteries as part of their EV strategy and digital health in its next phase of growth in India, its chairman Young Liu told ET on Saturday. “Foxconn is very well known for its vertical integration capabilities. Definitely, we want to move up on the value chain as much as we can in India. That’s what we will be doing in the ICT sector,” Liu said on the sidelines of the inauguration of the company’s massive industrial housing project in Sriperumbudur. “For sectors other than ICT, we think (we will focus on) EVs and energy and also the digital health industry, like wearables for personal use, home use type of medical devices,(and) in hospitals you can have cloud-based digital health systems,” he added. In the case of energy, Foxconn is looking to target batteries, which will be related to its larger EV strategy. Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) will play a “very big part” in the company’s strategy as it makes “a lot of impossible things possible,” he said.

China’s electric vehicles lose ground in EU after new tariffs take effect
tariffs slowed the influx of Chinese-made electric vehicles in July, as the bloc moved to protect its automakers from low-cost competition. The number of new EVs that Chinese automakers like BYD Co. and SAIC Motor Corp.’s MG registered in the EU last month fell 45% from June, according to research from Dataforce, which compiled results across the 16 member countries that have reported July figures to date. The drop may have been exaggerated by carmakers rushing to get EVs to dealers before the added levies took effect July 5.
