Why Louis Vuitton and Dior can't bring their shoes to India
Coveted worldwide for their style, design and durability, but shut out of the Indian market over quality rules: That’s the paradox facing French luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Dior and Christian Louboutin trying to sell their exquisite footwear in India. Footwear imports by these brands and others have faced hurdles after the government’s quality rules mandating the application of BIS standards for imported footwear, including embossing ISI marks on all footwear sold in India took effect in July 2023, three people aware of the matter said. Under the quality control order (QCO) on footwear, no company can manufacture, import, distribute, sell, hire, lease, store or exhibit any product in the country without the ISI mark.

₹25,938-crore production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for the sector have sought clarification on whether the investment timeline has been extended in line with the one-year extension of the scheme, according to industry executives. To align with the extended incentive disbursement period, companies have urged the government to also extend the investment timeline of the scheme by a year. The five-year PLI scheme for advanced automotive technologies (PLI-AAT), as it is formally known, was extended by a year in late December, after none of the participating companies could avail of benefits in the first year of the scheme ending March 2023 (FY23).

Indian space sector to be turned into a business activity: ISRO chairman
Indian space sector is changing from a «closed» and «secretive» society to an open one and the objective behind it is to turn it into an economic or business activity instead of government programme, ISRO Chairman S Somanath said here on Saturday. The change in mindset has been influenced by how space-related activities in countries like the USA have been turned into an economic activity, Somnath said while speaking at the Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters (MBIFL) 2024 being held at Kanakakunnu Palace here. The ISRO Chairman said that in the past 60 years, the work of the space sector — from making rockets to satellites — was aimed at societal application, for delivering services that benefit the common man. As a result, the budget of the space programme was «very less» — Rs 10,000 crore, he said during a session of the fifth edition of the MBIFL.
