Charting global economy: IMF raise global growth forecast, food supply concerns emerge
The Fed and ECB both lifted borrowing costs by a quarter of a percentage point while keeping options open for their next meetings in September. In Japan, the central bank made a surprise decision to loosen its yield curve control policy — a pillar of its effort to suppress interest rates and stimulate the economy. That stoked speculation of more drastic changes to the country’s ultra-low borrowing costs.

Flurry of electric PV launches set to widen India market
Tesla and Fisker firm up their India entry plans. Mainstream and luxury manufacturers including BYD, Citroën, Kia, BMW, MercedesBenz, Volvo, Audi, Porsche and Jaguar-Land Rover plan to unveil as many as 21 new electric passenger vehicles (PV). This is expected to fuel growth of the domestic EV market and make electric cars accessible to a wider range of consumers. Electric PVs still account for just 2.47% of total passenger vehicle sales, market researcher Jato Dynamics estimates. Tata Motors is making a big bet on the segment. “The EV contribution in our portfolio is likely to increase to 25% in five years and reach 50% by 2030,” the biggest player in the domestic electric PV market said in its report for 2022-23 (April-March). The company increased its electric vehicle sales from 1,300 units to over 50,000 in three years and has the widest range of EV offerings including hatchbacks, sedans and sports utility vehicles (SUVs).

India is in the final stages of concluding FTA negotiations with the UK. The country is also negotiating similar pacts with Canada and European Union (EU). «We can leverage the free trade agreements with the UAE and Australia and we are hopeful that in the next few months, we will finalise many more free trade agreements to help you grow your business with zero duty on finished leather products and footwear available for you to exploit bigger and better markets,» Goyal said while addressing footwear industry representatives here. The minister also asked the industry to focus on quality and sustainable manufacturing processes to tap business opportunities in the developed world. The Indian footwear and leather industry is not only a major foreign exchange earner but being a labour-intensive sector, it also provides employment to approximately 4.5 million people, 40 per cent of whom are women. He said that India has the capacity to become the world's largest and best-quality footwear manufacturer.

In the early 1900s, women working in the radium watch industry, famously known as "Radium Girls," faced grave health consequences, including cancer.
