New list of over the counter drugs soon
«We have held many meetings and looking at what best can be done,» said Dr Anupam Prakash, chairman of the OTC sub-committee. Unlike other countries like the US, UK or China, India does not have a policy framework to support and regulate distribution, marketing and consumption of OTC drugs. This is despite the fact that commonly used medicines for cough and cold as well as contraceptives are sold over the counter. Neither the Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940 nor the Drugs & Cosmetics Rules, 1945 (D&C) defines OTC medicines.

rare diseases to speed up their availability. India's drug regulator has asked the state drug regulators that a fast-track approval process be adopted, including post approval changes in the application while approving the sale of such drugs. The drug regulator has also asked state drug regulators to facilitate import of rare drugs in the interest of patients. «State drug controllers are requested to monitor compliance with the directions regarding the timeline for the approval of all applications for rare disease drugs which should be processed within 90 days from date of receiving,» DCGI said in a letter dated December 9. To make sure that drugs for rare diseases are available in India, he has asked all division heads to «monitor and proactively keep a watch on global clinical trials and local clinical trials for rare diseases and to process such files expeditiously,» it further said.

Spring onion’s freshness and South Korea’s protests
Spring Onion Revolt. South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol’s crisis crystallised after a recent supermarket appearance where he said the price of 875 won for a bunch of spring onions was reasonable. Koreans noted this was a just temporary discount at that supermarket spurred by subsidies. The real market price was between 3,000 and 4,000 won. Yoon appeared out of touch and duplicitous. Protestors waved spring onions, their long green leaves a vivid rebuke to the president. His party lost its parliamentary majority, precipitating a political confrontation in which the president declared martial law on December 3. Six hours later, massive protests and a parliamentary vote forced Yoon into a humiliating reversal. The vegetables most associated with Korean cuisine are cabbages, used for their iconic fermented kimchi, or medicinal plants like ginseng and mugwort. But spring onions are valued too, their mild pungency and green freshness putting them in both herb and vegetable categories. They are fermented into pa-kimchi and fried in pajeon pancakes.

'Every resident of Delhi is developing lung damage,' says Anurag Agrawal, Dean, Biosciences and Health research at Ashoka University
Anurag Agrawal, dean, biosciences and health research at Ashoka University, said haze of smog is eating into our health. Every resident of Delhi is developing some degree of lung damage, he told ET's Teena Thacker. Edited Excerpts: Going by the AQI right now, how many people would you think will have lung disease in years to come? At this level of pollution, every resident of Delhi is developing some degree of lung damage. Those with pre-existing disease or sensitivity are suffering more, but no one is immune. I do want to point out one thing we forget-for many people, especially women, without access to clean fuel, indoor air pollution has always been around and to an even higher degree. We should not forget them while speaking of outdoor air pollution that affects us.
