UPS MET CEO Adobe Software Interface Frontend devtool startup Kombai raises $4.5 million
startup Kombai has raised $4.5 million in a seed round led by Stellaris Venture Partners and Foundation Capital, the Pune-based company said on Tuesday. The funding also saw participation from some chief technology officers and software startup executives as angel investors. Kombai, founded by two former Mindtickle senior executives, said it will use the capital to continue investing in research and development, accelerate improvements to its base models, build compatibility with a range of libraries and frameworks used by developer teams and elevate the developer experience around the product. The company builds new artificial intelligence models that can understand and code user interface (UI) designs like humans. It is also set to launch its public research preview on Wednesday. With a mission to make frontend development more efficient for the 5 million frontend and 15 million fullstack developers around the world, Kombai lets developers with design files get production-quality UI code with just one click per component. The UI code can then be downloaded or copied into integrated development environments, modified and incorporated in codebases. User experience (UX) has become increasingly important for businesses, because of which user interfaces have become more and more sophisticated, leading to increased demand and complexity of frontend development, Kombai cofounder and CEO Dipanjan Dey said. “Developers still spend a significant amount of their working time, ranging from 25% to 75%, on procedural code such as styles (CSS), DOM (HTML), and framework-specific boilerplate,” Dey said.

MET Guv Anusuiya Uikey convenes Manipur House session on August 29
Anusuiya Uikey, has summoned the monsoon session of the state assembly on August 29 where burning issues plaguing the state like the ongoing ethnic violence and related issues are likely to be discussed. This is the second time that the state cabinet had recommended to the governor to convene the assembly, the first one being on August 4, when it had recommended the governor to convene the assembly on August 21. However, the governor did not summon the session. The chief minister's office on Tuesday posted on X: «The state cabinet, chaired by Hon'ble CM N Biren Singh on Monday, August 21, 2023, took a decision to convene the 4th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly (monsoon session) on August 29, 2023.» The Congress legislature party, led by former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh, had, on July 26, met the Governor and demanded that a special assembly session be convened under Article 174 (1) of the Constitution. Ten tribal MLAs, including seven MLAs from the ruling BJP, along with other tribal organisations, have since May 12 been demanding a separate administration for the tribals. The tribal legislators also said that they would not be able to attend the assembly session due to «security reasons» as Imphal is Meitei-dominated. Ibobi Singh, a three-term former chief minister, on Sunday said that there would be a constitutional crisis in Manipur if the assembly session is not held in six months.

MET FIVE Airlines Boeing cover National Financial Pakistan's national carrier grounds 11 aircraft due to financial crisis
Pakistan's cash-strapped national carrier has grounded 11 aircraft, including three of its Boeing 777s, due to unavailability of funds to carry out replacement of parts. An official in the Pakis-tan International Airlines (PIA) said the top management has grounded 11 planes in the last three years as there was a financial crisis prevailing in the airline and the increase in dollar rates and petroleum products had not helped the situation. The official, who didn't want to disclose his name, said that 11 out of 31 aircraft operated by the PIA on international and domestic routes were grounded at the Karachi and Islamabad airports. «The financial crisis has meant the airlines are not in a position to purchase spare parts since last year leading to the grounding of these aircraft gradually,» he disclosed. The previous government led by Shahbaz Sharif had appointed a new MD in PIA and unveiled its plans to privatise the national airline, an announcement which has been met with fierce resistance from the various unions in the airline. Some of the unions have gone on a strike and the official said this had not helped matters as well. Two of the three wide-body Boeing 777 aircraft were grounded in 2020 and one in 2021.

On a warm Friday afternoon on Aug. 17, 1923, a determined mother of two boys — one five, the other four — left her home in Toronto’s Cabbagetown and headed to the bank. Mrs. Hill was fretting about the coming winter, paying for coal and winter clothes for the boys she still called her “babies.” Her husband worked “odd jobs” and had “nearly starved himself” to save the $40 Mrs. Hill had tucked away in her purse. Last winter it was her parents that came through with money for coal and clothes. This winter her family would pay their way, she thought.
