Anusuiya Uikey, has summoned the monsoon session of the state assembly on August 29 where burning issues plaguing the state like the ongoing ethnic violence and related issues are likely to be discussed.
This is the second time that the state cabinet had recommended to the governor to convene the assembly, the first one being on August 4, when it had recommended the governor to convene the assembly on August 21. However, the governor did not summon the session.
The chief minister's office on Tuesday posted on X: «The state cabinet, chaired by Hon'ble CM N Biren Singh on Monday, August 21, 2023, took a decision to convene the 4th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly (monsoon session) on August 29, 2023.»
The Congress legislature party, led by former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh, had, on July 26, met the Governor and demanded that a special assembly session be convened under Article 174 (1) of the Constitution.
Ten tribal MLAs, including seven MLAs from the ruling BJP, along with other tribal organisations, have since May 12 been demanding a separate administration for the tribals.
The tribal legislators also said that they would not be able to attend the assembly session due to «security reasons» as Imphal is Meitei-dominated.
Ibobi Singh, a three-term former chief minister, on Sunday said that there would be a constitutional crisis in Manipur if the assembly session is not held in six months.
