Lok Sabha passes Railways (Amendment) Bill
Lok Sabha passed the Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2024 by a voice vote Wednesday. The bill seeks to repeal the Indian Railway Board Act, 1905 by incorporating the provisions for constitution and composition of the Railway Board into the Railways Act, 1989. Speaking during the debate on the proposed legislation, union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the bill will simplify the legal structure for operations of the Indian Railways. He also allayed concerns of privatisation and over centralisation of the Indian Railways raised by some members. Vaishnaw said there was no question of privatising the Indian Railways, adding that the infrastructure being developed was for the nation. He also said supremacy of parliament was not being affected by this legislation.

Google, Andhra Pradesh eyeing big AI opportunity in Vizag: CM Chandrababu Naidu
N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday said global tech giant Google and Andhra Pradesh are eyeing a big artificial intelligence (AI) opportunity in Visakhapatnam. Addressing a district collectors conference at the secretariat, the CM said Google and the southern state have signed an agreement, which would catapult the port city's development. «Recently when IT Minister (Nara Lokesh) went to America, he went to Google campus and requested them. And the result of that is today Google has (agreed to come to Vizag). We signed an MoU (agreement) before coming here. We are looking at a big opportunity in AI,» said Naidu. After proposing Vizag as a prospective location, the CM said Google executives visited Andhra Pradesh's largest city for a firsthand survey and were totally impressed. «If big firms like Google come to Visakhapatnam under strategic investment, that is a game changer,» he said, adding that data centres, AI, machine learning (ML) and deep tech, along with internet sea cables will transform the coastal city into a service hub for the globe. Further, the TDP supremo highlighted that Vizag will become a strategic location.

I have never met Adani, says TN CM raising pitch for JPC probe
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday said he never met industrialist Gautam Adani and sought to know if the BJP and its ally, the PMK, were prepared for a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe on the Adani issue. Responding to a question raised by PMK leader G K Mani in the Assembly, Stalin said he had no connection whatsoever with the industrialist whom the PMK and the BJP were spreading a 'misinformation' campaign that he had links. «Electricity Minister Senthil Balaji has already explained in a detailed manner. I and Adani have no ties at all. Are you prepared for a JPC probe on the issue,» Stalin asked, pointing at Mani. The Congress and some other opposition parties have been demanding a JPC probe following the indictment of Adani and other company officials in a US court over bribery allegations.

B Y Vijayendra's ouster as Karnataka BJP president, party national general secretary Radha Mohan Das Agrawal on Saturday said the leadership is not changed based on someone's demand. Any action against senior MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, who has been served a show cause notice, will be decided by high command based on his response, he said. The state BJP core committee that met, amid factional rift within the BJP with the Yatnal-led group openly criticising Vijayendra and not accepting his leadership, discussed controlling such acts of «indiscipline» in consultation with the high command. It was also decided at the meeting to bring to the notice of the party's national leadership for strict action against MLAs S T Somashekar and Shivaram Hebbar, who are involved in «anti-party» activities and have identified themselves with the Congress party.

BJP alleges Rahul Gandhi colluding with 'anti-India forces'
BJP on Thursday accused Lok Sabha's Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi of colluding with 'anti-India international forces'. The ruling party questioned him on a Mediapart (French outlet) report about news portal Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, BJP's Sudhanshu Trivedi said: «Is it a mere coincidence that when Parliament is on such reports ((harmful to India)) come out? The report on Indian farmers came out on February 3, 2021 and budget session began on January 29, 2021; Pegasus report came out on July 18, 20221, and monsoon session began on 19 July, 2021; then again budget session began on January 31, 2023, and the Hindenburg report had come out on January 24, 2023; the BBC report 'India: the Modi Question' also came out on January 17, 2023.» He also quoted Mediapart's report that certain foreign powers are funding OCCRP, which also focuses on India and has association with billionaire investor George Soros. In the Lok Sabha, BJP's Nishikant Dubey alleged that protests in Parliament were being held at the behest of some global outfits.

Canada Post strike is ‘highly disrespectful of Canadians’: minister
Canada Post strike nears the three-week mark, the federal labour minister called the nationwide mail stoppage “highly disrespectful” of Canadians.Speaking to reporters in Ottawa on Wednesday, Steven MacKinnon said he has been in regular contact with special mediator, Peter Simpson, to see where both parties stand after mediated talks were temporarily suspended last week.“I’ve been in daily discussions with … the mediator who is shuttling between the parties to see if there is a reasonable prospect that mediation, if it resumes, it will succeed. He has not yet given me that advice,” MacKinnon said.“The parties are still very far apart, and that is in my view, among other things, highly disrespectful of Canadians who are suffering through this work stoppage, small businesses, people in rural and remote communities who rely on Canada Post’s services and these parties have to knuckle down and get the work done.”By Wednesday, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business had estimated that the postal strike, which began on Nov.

Mahayuti stakes claim to form govt, Fadnavis to return as CM
Devendra Fadnavis will once again take over as chief minister of Maharashtra. On Wednesday morning, Fadnavis was unanimously elected as the legislative party leader at a BJP meeting at the state legislature, paving the way for him to be the chief minister of the state a third time. Fadnavis will be sworn in on Thursday. Fadnavis' name was proposed by MLAs Chandrakant Patil and Sudhir Mungantiwar and seconded by MLC Pankaja Munde and other members. Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani and Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman were the central observers overseeing the entire process. In his speech, Fadnavis thanked the legislators for electing him as the legislative leader. «If I have to analyse the results of this historic election, then the key message is 'Ek hai to safe hai' and 'Modi hai toh Mumkin hai',» Fadnavis told the BJP legislators. Fadnavis issued a note of caution to the BJP MLAs saying, «There are a lot of expectation from us. We have a huge mandate. We can't fulfil all the things that everyone wants. The larger goal for why we have come into politics is not for just any post or to become big. In the coming days, things will happen in our favour and things will go against us. In the larger interest, we have to work together,» Fadnavis said hinting that the BJP will also have to compromise in the interest of its two allies — Shiv Sena and NCP.
