Self-Driving Cars Might Just Transform the Way We Work
The head of BMW Group Designworks steered his car into a rest stop, highway traffic whizzing by in the background, and then dialed into his meeting. “I can’t concentrate on driving if I’m talking," says Holger Hampf, whose unit is internally known as “architects of the future." This pit stop, he says, happens to be an excellent example of what will change in the future. One day when cars can eventually drive themselves, executives will be able to sit back and work just as if they were in the office.

Army plans Rs 57,000 crore project to replace T-72 tanks with modern combat vehicles
Indian Army, with a strength of 12 lakhs, is preparing for a significant upgrade of its current tanks and the induction of new-generation tanks for future battles. In a TOI report, senior officers have stated that the extensive destruction of Russian tanks in the ongoing Ukraine conflict, primarily in the initial days, was more due to «poor tactics» than anything else. They noted that Russia deployed tanks without adequate logistics support and failed to provide sufficient backup from infantry, artillery, electronic warfare, and close-air support units. According to a senior officer, "Combined-arms operations" were critical and missing in the conflict. Tanks remain essential for both offensive and defensive operations, offering mobility, firepower, and armored protection crucial for large-scale ground battles.

Telco revenues may surge to Rs 2.78 lakh crore in FY25
telecom sector revenues are expected to surge 63% between FY16 and FY25 despite a broader consolidation that shrank the field from more than 10 private mobile operators to just three. Revenues stood at ₹1.7 lakh crore in FY16 with the sector having more than 10 private companies. This was before Reliance Jio made its debut the following year. Revenues are expected to touch ₹2.78 lakh crore in FY25 in an industry comprising only three private operators — Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi). The strong revenue growth will be driven by expected tariff hikes, a pick-up in conversions from 2G to higher revenue-yielding 4G/5G customers and users upgrading to higher value data plans. Even in the absence of rate hikes, telecom sector revenues this financial year are expected to touch ₹2.46 lakh crore, far exceeding the FY16 levels, amid strong appetite for 4G services and an improving subscriber mix, showed an analysis of Trai data by global brokerage, CLSA. The estimated jump in sectoral revenues (in absolute terms) is even more spectacular at 68% between FY17, when Jio entered the fray, and FY25.

How to develop bike-taxis (beyond issuing clarifications)
Mint explains: Bike-taxis offer a cost-effective mode of transportation, particularly for lower and middle-income groups. With fares of ₹8-10 per km, they compete well with traditional auto-rickshaws, catering to first- and last-mile connectivity needs. Their affordability and accessibility make them useful for urban mobility, especially in congested areas where other modes of transport may be scarce.

Cos take price-cut route to get more electric two-wheelers on road
Ola Electric last week cut the price of its entry-level scooter by ₹25,000. That brought down the price of the Ola S1X+, with a 3kwh electric motor, in line with that of the top-selling petrol-powered scooter, Honda's Activa. Steep price cuts and the launch of affordable models by companies like Ola Electric, Ather Energy and Bajaj Auto-owned Chetak Technology have helped narrow, or even bridge, the gap between the prices of battery-powered and petrol-run two-wheelers. Industry experts expect the increasing affordability to quicken the adoption of electric two-wheelers in India. While sales have been surging and are expected to be around 850,000 units in fiscal 2024, electric two-wheelers still account for just 4.5% of the market. The main challenges to adoption of this cleaner mode of mobility have been higher acquisition cost compared with petrol-powered models and inadequate charging infrastructure.
