Trai move to curb fraud could ring in an SMS outage next month
Consumers may face disruptions in getting service and transactional messages from banks, financial institutions and ecommerce firms on their mobile phones from next month following a telecom regulator move aimed at curbing spam, specifically phishing attempts. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has asked telcos to stop transmitting messages containing URLs, OTT links, APKs (Android application packages) or call-back numbers that are not whitelisted--or registered with telcos--by senders from September 1. The regulator's ultimatum means banks, financial institutions and online platforms must get their templates and content registered with operators by the August 31 deadline, failing which messages containing these elements will be blocked.

Has e-commerce boom really hampered the growth of brick-and-mortar retail?
Narendra Modi's BJP came to power. As then-secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (Dipp), Kant was presiding over a stakeholder discussion on whether multi-brand retail should be allowed in India. Over a decade since, Piyush Goyal has, yet again, highlighted his government's concerns over the growth of ecommerce in India — that there will be social disruption, there is predatory pricing in ecommerce, and the number of mobile stores in the country has declined over the past 10 years. He is concerned — and rightly so — about the fate of millions of small retailers and kirana stores in the country. The point that I made to Kant in 2014 still stands: ecommerce offers consumers a much wider variety of products, whether coloured socks, numbered swimming goggles or air-purifiers. It benefits both sellers and buyers. Customers in Tier-2 and -3 towns access a wider variety of products online, without relying on someone to go to a metro to purchase it. Sellers find buyers across the country.

Apple to let iPhone users in Europe delete its App Store
Apple will allow iPhone and iPad users in the European Union delete the App Store or its Safari browser, the tech giant told developers on Thursday. Apple had long fiercely protected the App Store as the lone gateway for digital content to get onto its popular mobile devices. The change comes as the company loosens its grip on devices in the EU due to the bloc's landmark new digital rules. «The App Store, Messages, Camera, Photos, and Safari apps will be deletable for users in the EU,» Apple said on a support page for developers.

Amazon's investment in India to make up for its losses; not to support Indian eco: Piyush Goyal
Piyush Goyal on Wednesday questioned Amazon's announcement of USD 1 billion investment in India, saying the US retailer was not doing any great service to the Indian economy but filling up for the losses it had suffered in the country. He said that their huge losses in India «smells of predatory pricing», which is not good for the country as it impacts crores of small retailers. Launching a report on 'Net Impact of e-commerce on Employment and Consumer Welfare in India' here, the minister lambasted the e-commerce companies, questioning their business model that has been impacting small retailers in the country. «When Amazon says that we are going to invest a billion dollars in India and we all celebrate, and we forget the underlying story that the billion dollars are not coming in for great service or any great investment to support the Indian economy. They made a billion-dollar loss in their balance sheet that year, they had to fill in that loss.

Death of the kirana store: Will quick commerce quicken it?
kirana stores. After e-commerce, now quick commerce is eating into India's large kirana sector which comprises nearly 12 million stores, selling groceries and personal care and other items. People are starting to shift some of their grocery shopping from local stores to quick commerce platforms such as Blinkit, Instamart, Zepto and BB Now, which are often able to offer products 10%-15% cheaper than local stores. When time is money, especially in urban areas, people are willing to pay a little more to save on it. When quick commerce gained shape in India during the Covid pandemic, a large section of the industry had written it off. Their argument was that Indian consumers were not going to pay convenience fees, no matter what. Some even insisted that consumers would happily wait for a few hours or even a day, if that meant they would get their orders delivered free. Today, one after the other, leading FMCG companies in their 2023-24 earnings report state that quick commerce is now not just their fastest growing channel, it is what is driving their e-commerce business growth itself, ET has reported.

Growth of e-commerce in India 'matter of concern, nothing to be proud of', says Piyush Goyal
Piyush Goyal on Wednesday expressed concerns over the rapid expansion of e-commerce firms in India, describing it as a «matter of concern» rather than an achievement. Speaking at an event for the launch of a report on the 'Net Impact of E-Commerce on Employment and Consumer Welfare in India', Goyal raised questions about the potential social disruption that might follow this surge. «Are we going to cause huge, social disruption with this massive growth of e-commerce? I don't see it as a matter of pride that half our market may become part of the e-commerce network 10 years from now; it is a matter of concern,” Goyal remarked.
