Jio added way more active users than Bharti Airtel in June 2024, but the Sunil Mittal-led telco added more higher-paying 4G and 5G users than its closest rival in that month. Vodafone Idea (Vi) continued to lose active users but gained some 3G and 4G users, according to latest telco subscriber data released by the regulator Tuesday. Jio added nearly 4 million active users to Airtel’s modest 0.67 million additions in June, while Vi lost as many as 2.71 million active users, latest customer data put out by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) showed. telcos' demand to bring OTTs under a licensing or authorisation regime, stating that apps are already regulated under the Information Technology Act (2000). Industry bodies representing the OTT players, in response to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) consultation paper seeking inputs on service authorisations under the newly passed Telecommunications Act, have cautioned against bringing the apps under regulation. “From a technical perspective, TSPs (telecom service providers) operate on the network side, while OTT providers operate on the application layer. Therefore, there is a clear distinction in the operational and technical and nature of OTT service providers and TSPs,” said the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) in its counter comments to the consultation paper, adding that OTT services do not fall within the scope of the telecom act.

Aware Mobile WhatsApp band Department DoT may ask Trai to take a call on backhaul spectrum based on usage
Department of Telecommunications (DoT) believes that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) should examine the issue of backhaul spectrum holistically, particularly due to technology advancements such as 5G and 6G, said officials. While historically, backhaul airwaves were given administratively, or without auctioning, telecom operator Reliance Jio says such bandwidth can also be used for access, or mobility services, and hence should be auctioned, a point opposed by rivals Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Satcom players such as Elon Musk-owned Starlink and Amazon's Project Kuiper want the same spectrum to be offered administratively, on a non-exclusive basis, for meeting their connectivity needs.
