85% Paytm wallet users not to face disruption; rest asked to link wallet to other banks: RBI Guv
Paytm wallet users will not face any disruption because of regulatory actions, and the remaining users have been advised to link their apps to other banks, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said on Wednesday. The Reserve Bank of India on January 31 barred Paytm Payments Bank Ltd (PPBL) from accepting deposits, credit transactions, or top-ups in any customer accounts. The deadline for linking the wallet attached with PPBL with other banks has been fixed for March 15, the governor said, ruling out any further extension.

Executed former Pak PM Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto did not receive fair trial: Supreme Court
Pakistan prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, executed by the military regime in 1979, did not receive a fair trial, the Supreme Court observed on Wednesday. Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa announced the unanimous opinion of a nine-member larger bench of the apex court during the hearing of a presidential reference related to the death sentence given to the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) founder. It is based on a special case sent in 2011 by then president Asif Ali Zardari to the Supreme Court to revisit his father-in-law Bhutto's conviction for abetment in a murder case and his eventual hanging in 1979.

Aid for women not 'revdi'; using taxes for welfare, says Atishi
Delhi government's new scheme, Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana, which promises ₹1,000 per month to women above 18 years of age is not «revdi» (freebie) but a social welfare initiative aimed at empowering women and boosting economic liquidity, Delhi finance minister Atishi has said. Speaking to ET, Atishi said AAP government's schemes had been criticised as «revdi» by political opponents but the state government was utilising taxes paid by the people for their welfare. «If we can run the government in fiscal surplus and also give the citizens of Delhi everything (free electricity, water, healthcare and education), why shouldn't we? What is bothering the opponents so much? Atishi presented the Budget 2024-25 on Monday, announcing the programme for women over 18 who are not income-tax payers, have a government employment, or get a pension. According to Delhi government estimates, 45-50 lakh women out of 67 lakh women voters will be eligible under this initiative.

Not in a hurry to add new categories; will focus on grocery: BigBasket CEO Hari Menon
BigBasket said it is not in a rush to broaden its product portfolio and will continue to focus primarily on grocery even as quick commerce rivals such as Zomato-owned Blinkit and Mumbai-based Zepto are rapidly diversifying into newer categories. “We evaluate new categories carefully and are very careful about entering segments beyond grocery… For now, we’ll remain a grocer and depending on the need we will keep adding categories as we go along,” Hari Menon, cofounder and CEO of BigBasket, told ET in an interaction on Tuesday.

Strong alliances do not enhance India's global standing, loose associations favourable, says Jaishankar in S. Korea
Jaishankar on Tuesday said strong alliances do not enhance a country's global standing while, on the contrary, India had a favourable result from loose or issue-based alliances. «Today, we see India in many ways as playing a useful role as a kind of bridging country which can contribute and address problems. And I think unfortunately the state of the world requires such services,» the minister said in response to a question following his address to the Korea National Diplomatic Academy here. Jaishankar's address was a part of the first leg of his four-day visit to South Korea and Japan. «I don't agree that strong alliances enhance global standing and lose alliances detract. At the beginning of our presidency of the G20, people were worried whether we would be able to get an agreement at the end of it and we had two problems — the Ukraine conflict and the issue of development. A lot of Global South had concerns. We have different ties to one group, I think it would have been difficult to get the G20 to come around had it not been such a case,» the minister said.

Houthis targeting merchant ships in Red Sea; situation not very good: Admiral Hari Kumar
Houthis are targeting merchant ships belonging to either Israel, the US or the UK in the Red Sea with drones and missiles and the situation is «not very good». Describing the activities in the Red Sea as «an offshoot of the Israel-Hamas conflict», the Admiral said the Indian Navy is providing necessary protection primarily to India-flagged ships and also to other vessels that seek assistance. «Indian Navy is supporting all merchant ships in their to and fro journey between the Red Sea and Indian Ocean Region. Primarily, we are looking at the India-flagged vessels but also assisting any ship that seeks our help,» the Naval chief told reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of the new Administrative building of Naval War College near Panaji. Admiral Kumar further said the Indian Navy has given a clear message (to attackers) that we will not tolerate such acts, [which] make the Indian Ocean unsafe".

"Your teammate and adviser may not get it correct": Paytm founder Sharma breaks silence after RBI's curb on banking unit
Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma voiced confidence that his digital payments pioneer will overcome regulatory setbacks in India this year and stage a comeback as a stronger company. “The biggest thing that I’ve learned is that many times your teammate and adviser may not be getting it correct,” Sharma said at a financial technology conference in Tokyo Tuesday, his first public appearance since Indian regulators ordered his banking affiliate to halt certain activities. “And it is important for you, yourself to be taking care of it versus just letting a teammate or a adviser suggest that what should it be.” Sharma is fighting to put his digital-payments company back on stable footing after regulators placed severe curbs on the banking affiliate, the backbone for much of its financial and payments services. Both Paytm and Paytm Payments Bank are part of the billionaire’s fintech empire, but the bank isn’t controlled by the publicly traded mobile wallet pioneer.

Still have plans for listing diagnostics business but not in the near term: Sriram Iyer, Apollo Health & Lifestyle
Sriram Iyer, CEO, Apollo Health & Lifestyle, says “more than 80% of the diagnostics market is still unorganised, less than 20% is between the national and the regional players. There is definitely headroom for growth and the prospects look brighter and the awareness is really going up. Preventive health check is becoming the key now and there is a lot of work happening in the healthcare space for consumers to become more aware.” Given the lots of tugs and pulls and a wrestling of a larger share volume that continues to remain high, the price competition may have cooled off a tad. What is your diagnosis of the industry as a whole? Sriram Iyer: So, as rightly said, the prospects are quite good for the industry. There are two things. Obviously, the penetration of healthcare is quite low. Diagnostic is the first point of really getting checked before you get into further treatments in healthcare.

Prakash Ambedkar says Sena (UBT) refused written undertaking on not forming post-poll alliance with BJP
Prakash Ambedkar who heads the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi has raised questions on the credibility of the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance saying that the parties in the opposition alliance especially the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction of the Sena were not willing to give it in writing that they would not join hands with the BJP after the Lok Sabha results. Ambedkar revealed this in a letter to Nationalist Congress Party Sharad Pawar, leader Jitendra Awhad which he posted on ‘X’ social media. According to Ambedkar during the meeting of the Maharashtra opposition leaders, he had suggested that to increase confidence among the voters, a written undertaking should be given to the voters by all the leaders of the opposition alliance that they would not join the BJP in a post poll scenario. Ambedkar wrote, “Your party representative was silent when I had suggested that we give a written undertaking to the voter that after the elections there would be no understanding with the BJP/RSS.”

We must not let Indian agriculture turn into an unending tragi-comedy
₹4 trillion. To put it in context, that is around 8% of the budget’s total expenditure, second only to defence in its non-interest expenditure pie. Add to it separate outlays from state governments—state-level top-ups for minimum support prices (MSPs), power subsidies, etc—and the amount is likely to go up substantially.

Hero MotoCorp Ltd and Eicher Motors Ltd’s Royal Enfield motorcycles. But this could be a one-time boost. “We expect this volume (growth in exports) to be one-off due to aggressive inventory built up in anticipation of increasing freight costs ahead due to the Red Sea crisis," Antique Stock Broking analysts said in a report on 4 March.
