Study: Refrigeration effective in preventing E. coli on lettuce, not kale and collards
lettuce from E. coli contamination, but not kale and collards — types of saag — a new research has found. Seeing outbreaks on lettuce but not on kale and other brassica vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens and others, researchers analysed the tendencies of leafy greens to get infected with E. coli, or Escherichia coli, a bacterium species found in lower intestines of humans. While generally harmless, some of its strains are occasionally responsible for food contaminations and can cause food poisoning. The researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, US, infected whole leaves from five leafy greens — romaine lettuce, green-leaf lettuce, spinach, kale, and collards — with E. coli (serotype O157:H7) and observed what happened after storing them under these temperatures — 4 degrees Celsius (refrigeration), 20 degrees Celsius (room temperature) and 37 degrees Celsius (normal body temperature). Overall, a combination of both temperature and leaf surface properties such as roughness and the natural wax coating were found to govern susceptibility to the bacterial contamination, the researchers found.

Why is the Q3 GDP surprise not surprising?
GDP growth print for 3Q contrasts the grim reality of household consumption and income situation. The latest national expenditure survey (2022-23), released after a lag of 11 years shows real consumption grew modestly at 3% over the past 11 years and the PLFS data indicates flat real incomes over the past four years. Also, most consumer companies have shown a lackluster demand situation. What is not surprising is that the persisting discordance has accentuated in the 3Q print and reflects in a) the large contribution of the discrepancy component, b) a sharp rise in net indirect taxes translating into enlarged expenditure GDP, and c) a disproportionate decline in imports relative to the decline in consumption.

Detecting deepfakes should not be the sole responsibility of platforms: Sam Gregory
World Economic Forum says AI-driven misinformation could interfere with electoral processes in various countries, including India. Sam Gregory, executive director of Witness, a global human rights organisation, which uses video and technology to expose human rights abuses and has worked on the threats of AI and deepfakes, spoke to ET about AI related challenges and strategies in elections. Edited excerpts: Can you quantify the risk of deepfakes in elections? We are entering a challenging moment in terms of deepfakes. This year, we have made technical progress that makes it easier and cheaper to make them. We are going to have an election year where synthetic media tools will be used for positive purposes such as voter outreach, and for negative ones.

How to not get caught boycotted
political turmoil, numerous voices have advocated for boycotting products, services, brands and even nations as a mark of protest. Take the BDS — boycott, divestment, sanctions — movement, which wants to pressure Israel to change its policies towards Palestinians through various forms of economic and political actions. It first gained international attention in the early 2000s. It has targeted global business entities such as Nestle, Burger King, Disney, Siemens, HP, Puma, Carrefour and others for supporting Israel, covertly or overtly. Many governments have also taken this route. Last year, Turkish parliament withdrew Coca-Cola and Nestle products from restaurants in parliament for supporting Israel. India has done things more subtly. It used BJP's social media arm to mobilise people to boycott Chinese products after border skirmishes, and to boycott the Maldives as a tourist destination after a minister made uncharitable remarks about India.

Will not move from this site: Uttarakhand tunnel rescue hero after spending second night on footpath
Wakeel Hassan, a rat-hole miner who was part of the Silkyara tunnel rescue operation, sitting on a footpath where he and his family spent their second night after losing their house in a demolition drive. «My family and I continue to spend the night in the open. Some locals are providing us with food and water, etc.,» Hassan said on Friday, a day after he refused an offer by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to move him and his family to an EWS flat in Narela. «We have now accepted the night as a challenge,» he said, adding the family has not received any help from the government so far. Hassan was part of a team of miners who rescued 41 workers trapped inside Uttarkashi's Silkyara tunnel by manually drilling through the debris in November last year.

Deepak Shenoy likes to buy more when stocks go up and not only on dips: Here's why
Deepak Shenoy, Founder, Capital Mind, says: “We would like to buy more when the stocks go up rather than just on declines. But we are still very positive on a few themes that are very specifically India, because of the infrastructure changes, because of the focus on a lot of Indian local domestic improvements where adding more players in logistics for instance allows us to see the urban and rural consumption divide narrowing down over a period of time because of accessibility, roads, rail, and cargo infrastructure. We are adding a few players. We have very little changes from last time but we have added a couple of special situations. Indian manufacturing space is where we are targeting. From semiconductors to a bunch of players around infrastructures, around domestic manufacturing, auto ancillaries we have added.” I understand you were part of that meeting where the finance minister met the fintechs. What really came out of it, was Paytm top of the heap? Deepak Shenoy: No, we were talking more about the problems faced by the fintech industry in general from a perspective of what could be done to improve the situation. Some of them involve a deeper consultation with the RBI, some of them are issues around how the taxation laws are created, some of them were ideas about new products.
