Finally on the road to a sporting chance
GoI is finally focusing its attention to ensure national sports federations serve to promote their sport and athletes rather than become a hindrance. The draft National Sports Governance Bill 2024 focuses on building institutional capacity and governance standards for national sports federations. The aim is to build a modern, flexible and empowered sports administration aligned with Olympic and Paralympic charters. This was a much-needed regulatory intervention, considering the controversies over sexual harassment, favouritism, opaqueness and misgovernance that have dogged a range of federations.

Queen bows out: Former Indian women's hockey skipper Rani Rampal announces retirement
Indian women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal announced her retirement on Thursday, ending a glittering 16-year career during which she became an inspiration for beating abject poverty and conservative views at a small town in Haryana where her father worked as a cart-puller. The-29-year-old will sign off as one of India's most decorated hockey players after leading the women's team to its best-ever finish at the Olympics — a fourth place at the Tokyo Games in 2021. «It's been an outstanding journey. I never thought I will play for so long for India. I have seen a lot of poverty from childhood but focus was always to do something, represent the country,» she told reporters here. A clinical forward, who made her international debut in 2008 as a 14-year-old in the Olympic qualifiers that year, Rani scored 205 goals in her 254 outings for India.

WFI withdraws India from World Championship, writes to UWW about govt interference
Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Wednesday withdrew the Indian team from the World Championship, conveying to world governing body, UWW, that the sports ministry is interfering with its autonomy. The senior World Championship in 12 non-Olympic categories is scheduled to be held in Tirana, Albania from October 28. The WFI had recently announced selection trials for the U23 and World Championship, which was challenged as contempt of court by the protesting wrestlers who questioned the legality of the selection by the suspended federation. WFI withdrew the selection trials notice and the court, on October 4, decided not to proceed with the contempt petition.

Hockey India League back in business after a 7-year hiatus
Hockey India League (HIL), resurrected after seven years in cold storage, held its auctions in New Delhi last week with franchises – eight men and four women – snapping up players from across the globe. Harmanpreet Singh and Udita Duhan, current national team stars, emerged as the costliest buys at Rs 78 lakh and Rs 32 lakh in men’s and women’s leagues respectively. “It is not about the money. We are all in this for the development of the sport,” said Rahul Todi of Shrachi, owner of the Bengal Rarh Tigers franchise. While the auction was a success, there are still some lingering questions. Is the league sustainable? Can franchises make money in the long run? How will the league help the future of Indian hockey? There was already a minor setback for the organisers, Hockey India (HI); they had to reduce the number of women’s teams from six to four. However, the organisers said that the number will go back to six teams in 2026. “A lot of the current stars including Harmanpreet emerged into prominence from the Hockey India League. With back-to-back Olympic medals, there could be no better time to restart the league,” said PR Sreejesh, former India goalkeeper and Delhi SG Pipers team director, who was present for the two days of the auction before donning the hat of junior team head coach and leaving for Malaysia.

Going to take another 10 years to produce a Grand Slam champion: Leander Paes
Leander Paes believes India needs at least a decade to produce another Grand Slam champion, urging former players to nurture young talent to transform the nation into a sports superpower capable of not only hosting the 2036 Olympics but also winning medals. «I think it's probably going to take another 10 years to produce a Grand Slam champion. I think that the focus needs to be on the grassroots base level and then the feeder system coming up, then you churn out the numbers,» Paes said on the sidelines of the auctions of the Tennis Premier League (TPL) here on Wednesday. «I 100% believe we have tremendous talent in India, but I believe it's people like myself along with the governance, along with the whole sporting fraternity, to reach out to that talent in rural areas in places where maybe those children are not as fortunate as you and I, to have the parents who gave us that platform to stand on. »I think it's a responsibility for us to reach out there and find that talent, test that talent and once you pick it, bring it into academies where you nurture the talent," added Paes, who was recently inducted into the sport's Hall of Fame.
