Paris Paralympics: Can Harvinder Singh’s gold lift archery in India?
Neeraj Chopra moment in Tokyo that changed the face of javelin in India and inspired many to take up the sport. Harvinder Singh’s gold medal in para archery in the men’s individual recurve open event on Wednesday has similar potential. For a long time, the Olympics or Paralympics, archery has been about heartbreaks and missed opportunities. It was Limba Ram in 1992, Deepika Kumari in 2012 and Dhiraj Bommadevara in 2024. Bommadevara shot well but still missed out on a medal. In a sense, it was becoming a curse. Shoot offs, inner 10s, something or the other would keep happening and the Indians would miss the podium. The jinx was finally broken by Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar when they won bronze in the mixed team event in compound. But they too faced a heartbreak in the semi final losing a shoot off against Iran. A gold medal, which has the ability to transform a sport, continued to be elusive.

The 25-year-old welterweight's success in Paris has vaulted her to national hero status, especially after Algerians rallied behind her in the face of uninformed speculation about her gender and eligibility to compete. Amateur boxer Zougar Amina, a medical student who's been practicing for a year, called Khelif an idol and role model.

If you take wrestling away from me, you take the life out of me: Vinesh Phogat
Vinesh Phogat, the sports icon who, despite falling short of a medal, has etched her name in the annals of sporting history. On a rain-soaked evening in Jalandhar, thousands gathered at Lovely Professional University on August 29 for a felicitation event honouring the Olympic champions, which also included Vinesh Phogat. When Vinesh finally appeared, the cheers from the crowd were deafening. Despite her smiles, the sadness in her eyes was unmistakable. The rain seemed to echo her emotions, momentarily blurring her vision as she faced the throngs of fans who had come to honour her achievements. Even with the emotional weight she carried, the event soon transformed into a celebration of her indomitable spirit, with the crowd doing everything they could to lift her spirits.

Turkish star Yusuf Dikec wants to trademark his viral Olympic shooting stance. What it means
Yusuf Dikec has become a global sensation after his nonchalant stance at the Paris Games went viral, capturing the attention of fans, fellow athletes, and even world's richest person like Elon Musk. This pose, characterized by his non-shooting hand casually tucked into his pocket, has sparked a frenzy of memes, comparisons to fictional spy James Bond, and widespread imitation both within and outside the sporting world. Recognizing the overwhelming popularity of his stance, Dikec has taken steps to protect his iconic pose by filing for a trademark with the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. His coach, Erdinc Bilgili, revealed that the move was prompted by several attempts to trademark the pose without Dikec's knowledge or consent. «After being informed of numerous trademark registration initiatives carried out without Yusuf Dikec's knowledge, we submitted an application about a week ago,» Bilgili told AFP, adding that the «other applications have been rejected.» The decision to trademark the pose is not just about protecting Dikec's intellectual property but also about safeguarding the commercial use of his likeness. The viral nature of his pose has led to the creation of various memorabilia, including T-shirts, mugs, and mobile phone covers, all bearing his image. Turkish news channel TRT Haber reported the widespread sale of such items, further emphasizing the need for trademark protection.

Ready for cloud seeding, need permissions: Delhi Environment Minister as NCR gears up for winter pollution
Gopal Rai, Delhi Environment Minister and AAP leader, released a statement on Sunday regarding the possibility of cloud seeding (artificial rain) and the construction of smog towers in Delhi. Gopal Rai refuted the allegations by BJP leaders that the Delhi government was wasting money by not constructing smog towers. «Yesterday, BJP leaders said that money was wasted. They do not know that on the orders of the court, the Delhi government built a smog tower in Connaught Place and the centre built in Anand Vihar. In such a situation, how did the Delhi government waste money?», said the Delhi Environment minister. Rai criticised the condition of the smog tower built by the Union government in Anand Vihar, he added, «Also, find out what the condition of the smog tower built by the Centre is, and why are you hiding the smog tower of Anand Vihar. We are always ready to give all kinds of support to the Centre.»

The Paralympics: Why they are important and how they impact society
Sivarajan Solaimalai 21-13, 18-21, 21-15 in a group game on Friday, Hong Kong’s Chu Man Kai went across the net and bowed to appreciate the efforts of his opponent. The two embraced each other before walking off the court while holding each other’s hand. It was sport at its best. Although they had given their all on the court, the moment the match was over, it was all about spirit and values. The Paralympics is not just about winning or losing. The essence of Olympism (or Paralympism, if we can call it that) is not in the medals won, records broken or television rights sold.

The bar for entry to this exercise is over your head
Some people hold their breath at the sight of anyone attempting to pole vault. A smaller number see that and think, “Why not me?" To pull off a pole vault jump, you sprint down a runway while holding a fiberglass or carbon fiber pole in your hands, plant the pole and propel yourself over a horizontal bar that’s often at least 6 feet high without knocking it over, then fall into a cushioned landing area. “If you can run, do some push-ups and pull-ups, and are able to conquer physical and mental challenges, you can learn to pole vault," says former Plymouth State University pole vault coach Adam Keul.

Meet Rubina Francis, the star pistol shooter who won India's fifth medal at the Paris Paralympics
Rubina Francis, a para shooter from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, secured India's fifth medal at the Paris Paralympics by winning a bronze in the P2 — 10m Air Pistol SH1 event. Francis scored 211.1 to finish third in the eight-woman final after qualifying in the seventh spot earlier in the day. She becomes India's fourth medallist in shooting at the Paris Paralympics, following Avani Lekhara, who won gold, Mona Agarwal, who took bronze, and Manish Narwal, who claimed silver. Born into a lower-middle-class family, Rubina Francis has a leg dysfunction. Her father, Simon Francis, a mechanic, faced financial difficulties while supporting her growing passion for shooting. Rubina’s journey in shooting began in 2015, inspired by her admiration for the Olympic achievements of Gagan Narang. Despite financial obstacles, her determination led her to Pune's Gun for Glory Academy in 2017, with her father’s tireless efforts aiding her progress. Under the mentorship of Jai Prakash Nautiyal, Rubina's talent quickly became evident. This led to her selection at the MP Shooting Academy, where her skills flourished under renowned coach Jaspal Rana, earning her first international medal. A significant turning point in her career came during the 2018 France World Cup, where she realized the importance of securing a Paralympic quota, prompting her to intensify her training efforts.

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat took up the farmers' cause by joining protesters at the Shambhu border (located between Punjab and Haryana) on August 31, demanding that the central government address their demands. Farmers under the banners of Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha organized a 'kisan mahapanchayat' to commemorate 200 days of their protest. They have been demonstrating at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points since February 13, following a blockade by security forces.

Novak Djokovic's US Open defeat sparks questions over legend's future
Novak Djokovic slumped to his earliest exit at the US Open in 18 years on Friday as a four-set, third round defeat to Alexei Popyrin sparked more questions over his long term future in the sport. The 37-year-old Djokovic, a four-time champion in New York, lost 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to the 28th-ranked Australian, leaving him frustratingly short once again of winning a record 25th Grand Slam title. His defeat, which saw him hit an uncharacteristic 14 double faults and commit 49 unforced errors, means that for the first time since 2017 he will end the season without a Grand Slam title.
